TRACKING TIPS FROM A GUERRILLA HOME RECORDIST
1. Spend some time working out the progression/arrangement of the song before you rush off to record.
2. Get as much gain (volume) as possible without inducing clipping when you start tracking.
3. Vocals are an important part of the song. Make sure the listener hears every word you sing. Learn breath control to see that inflections come out right.
4. Use reverb sparingly. It's there to simulate room/hall ambience, not drown your voice in karaoke-style echo.
5. If you don't have access to a soundproof room, plug in all instruments direct.
6. Sing in your natural voice (unless your song requires you to be in falsetto mode), and pronounce words like you would in normal speech. Keep intros short, sweet and snappy, and choruses, airy and catchy.
7. Recording on a PC is the most economical way to get decent results. But if you don't have access to one, an MP3 player/recorder or a cassette recorder will do.
8. Never forget that there's plenty of terrific music out there, and much of it is underappreciated. So try to be as good as you can get in your musical endeavours and do everything in your power to promote your songs once you've put them online.
9. Review everything you do and always trust the advice of people with a good musical sense who're NOT your friends.
10. The final mix is what's going to make or break a song, so pay special attention to instrument levels, panning, and clarity of lead instruments/vocals before you mix down and burn.
Happy Trax!
