ok guys, kinda boring and i do research and reading alot.. i see alot of people around the world kinda like this topic and it bring a sense in my head
i know between this 2 option is always head upon what the sound u want it to be, but at times we get different application of this 2 method.
just need a different point of view where and when to apply mono and stereo.
more than 20 forum world wide i see they been asking the same question:
1. do i need to set the drum multitrack all instrument in mono?
2. do i need to record guitar in mono? or stereo?
3. do i need to record bass in mono? or stereo?
4. do i need to record vocal in mono? or stereo?
5. how about synth?
typical question. as we know choosing between mono or stereo could giv a different out come in panning, surrounding, reverb, and end mix.
what do you guys think out of it? when and where to use it? does both of them create a different shape of amplitude? (ie: volume) _________________ Support Malaysia Local Band

The general rule of thumb is that if the sound source is a :
1) single point source = mono
e.g. voice, bass, gtr, close-miked drums etc.
2) wide/multiple point source = stereo
e.g. piano, drum overhead/ambient mics, string sections, choirs, synths etc.
Bear in mind that double-tracked guitars (recording two separate tracks of guitar and spreading them L-R) isn't technically stereo, but referred to as "wide mono". Same with doubled backing vocals. These are still mono sources but panned at opposite ends of the stereo spectrum.
In practice, it's entirely up to you and how it fits in the context of the song. There's nothing wrong in recording mono drums or stereo lead vocal ... whether it is appropriate or not is another question.

Very simple way to answer : The song will determine the need.
Usually, synths are already a stereo source and tend to take up a lot of space in the mix, so a single track will usually suffice. _________________ [Record Producer/Mixer/Recording Engineer]

It's important to be clear in what we're discussing as the two, although related, are entirely different things.
The answer is the same; how many tracks is up to you if it feel that it helps the song. _________________ [Record Producer/Mixer/Recording Engineer]

The thought process that goes into recording is very important to the outcome of the mix. Just because it was written somewhere that so and so artist/engineer recorded x number of stereo tracks, doesn't mean that its the right way to do it. It just happens to be the right approach for that particular song. Unless the song you're working on has an almost identical style/genre and similar choice of sounds, just duplicating other methodologies isn't going to give the best results.
Mono surprisingly can have a lot more depth than simply stereo-miking everything. Sometimes the stereo lushness can blind one into thinking that it sounds better, whereas the fact is that it is simply introducing phase problems, hiding poor mic placement and poor tone to start with... things that will come back to haunt us come mix time. _________________ [Record Producer/Mixer/Recording Engineer]

i once read somewhere about Ken Pooch Van Druten,
he'd actually dup the mono guitar slight delay and detune it to make it big and chorus-y kind of effect, _________________ If it sounds "right", it is RIGHT |
