IMHO, Frampton's best work was with a group called Frampton's Camel, which he formed just after leaving Humble Pie.
Their eponymous album came out in 1973, and I remember the thrill of saving up school money to buy the original LP for $10 at Rockzy Music, Penang's coolest record shop in the '70s.
I still have the LP -- the grooves are kinda worn from overplay, though -- and two of the songs from it -- 'Lines on My Face' and a fabulous rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'I Believe (When I Fall in Love With You It Will Be Forever)' where Frampton does one of his most soulful guitar solos ever -- still give me goose pimples.
The album also has the original studio version of 'Do You Feel Like We Do', which I never really got into. And I kinda hated the somewhat overrated 'Frampton Comes Alive' which was annoyingly inescapable -- all the drunk dudes at parties would irritate the shit out out of me by mimicking that tedious talk-box solo -- at the time.
I also bought Larry Carlton's self-titled solo debut -- still his best album in my opinion and the one that cemented his reputation as a master of tone, especially on a Gibson ES-335 -- from the same shop in the late '70s.
It was a sad day when one of my favourite record shops was forced to close, basically because the cool Chinaman owner -- a true-blue denim-clad, long-haired hippie dude -- was too much a music lover to concentrate on making money!
I still have more than 600 LPs from those days, including all the Led Zep classics, loads of British classic-rock and prog-rock shit, all the Hendrix albums, and tons of jazz classics.
My maddening obsession with music in the '70s helped me land one of the coolest jobs ever -- reviewing albums for a local newspaper (loads of free cassettes, LPs & CDs), which I did for 15 years before I saw the light and decided to escape from corporate slavery.
Oops, I think I just revealed how ancient I am!

I was backpacking, bumming and busking around Europe for about four months in 1984 when I had just enough dough to see him play at an abandoned godown converted into a pub in Hamburg.
Was standing about 10 feet away from him throughout the show. He was using a custom pedalboard that wasn't much to look at but yielded some truly killer tones.
One of the best live gigs I've ever attended... and I've done plenty of those in my old line of work!
I also saw Mike Oldfield (big mistake) and John Cale (one of the freakiest rock shows I've seen) around the same time.
Did I tell you that I got to hang out (well, sort of) with Eric Clapton when he was in KL, interview Rod Stewart in his hotel room in Singapore, hug Kylie Minogue in Hong Kong (???), meet Melissa Etheridge in Melbourne, watch a world music fest in the Australian outback during a special train trip, enjoy a week of jazz and plenty of free beer (courtesy of Carlsberg) in Copenhagen, and interview hundreds of top bands and solo acts? Those were the days, man!
PS. Some of my old album and concert reviews are now floating around in cyberspace. That's scary, man!

But don't call me pak cik, OK!
As for my job, well I don't have it anymore! After more than 15 years of reviewing albums and concerts and interviewing artists, I decided enough was enough.
It was fun while it lasted, but it was also disillusioning to realize that everyone's in it mainly for the money. Such a thing as art for art's sake doesn't exist in the big bad world of pop music! |

Looks like he's playing, not a 335, but some sort of custom copy. |
