Garfunkel's Sounds of Sirens

Art Garfunkel was apparently heading to Scarborough Fair with a little more than parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme.

The tall half of Simon and Garfunkel was busted for pot possession in upstate New York after his limo was pulled over for speeding on Saturday.

According to a statement issued by New York State Police, the 62-year-old wiry-haired singer was the lone passenger in the limousine when a state trooper stopped the vehicle just after noon outside the town of Hurley, 55 miles southwest of the state capital Albany.

According to police, Art was feeling more than a little groovy. "The trooper noted a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle," the police statement read. (Gives new meaning to "Hazy Shade of Winter, eh?)

When the smoke cleared, the musician offered his identification and announced he was a celebrity. The officer searched the limo and turned up a "small amount" of pot in Garfunkel's jacket pocket.

State Police Captain Louis Barbaria was quoted in Hurley's local paper, the Daily Freeman, as saying that the trooper didn't recognize Garfunkel until much later.

No immediate word on why the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was in the area. A rep for Garfunkel was not available for comment.

The pot charge is more embarrassing than anything else. Garfunkel faces a maximum $100 fine and has a January 28 court date. But since the crime is a misdemeanor, the singer doesn't have to appear in person--he can either send a lawyer to deal with it or simply mail in a check.

The $100 won't do much to dent Garfunkel's pocketbook. The average ticket price on his much-heralded 29-city "Old Friends" reunion trek with Paul Simon was $137. The tour, the duo's first in more than two decades, grossed nearly $65 million last year and ranked as the sixth-biggest tour of 2003, according to concert tracker Pollstar.
