Of course for seasoned and hardcore shredders, it never died. It's the ever evolving & revolving music industry, like fashion & trends, that determined whats 'hot' and what's 'not'. The mid-80s up till mid-90s period was considered as the shred-guitar era. Now, as reported by the few international guitar mags who are 'in touch' with the 'industry', they reckon that shred is on an upturn, making a wild comeback. Rapid fire picking, killer appreggios, nausetic chromatics, wicked legato and all that.

yep.true..you can see alot of new metal bands are really proficient in the above..but when they say shred is back..does that mean the genre 80's rock is back too? just wondering... _________________ my photoblog - http://sigemok.blogspot.com |

80's rock? maybe not... perhaps just some extreme metal act with killer guitar solos at 200 bpm!! ie: Soilwork, Arch Enemy, etc... _________________ > facebook

fine then.
in my opinion..i never think that shred was ever popular, mainstream or hot..
mid 80's up and early 90's..i think the metal/rock scene was alot more mainstream /popular than shred ?(correct me if i am wrong)
for me i would relate this to guitar solos..maybe guitar solos is coming back..
but back again this all goes back to who do you consider a shredder, who you don't ..some people consider van halen ,zakk wylde , kirk hammet ,marty friedman ,alexi laiho shredders (which i don't..but it is a subjective opinion )
so when this guitar mag says "shred is back" they could be reffering to alexi laiho , Vai & satch (IMO they have very very little shred in their music) ,steve morse or something
for me ,when anybody mentioned shred ..the names that comes into my mind are rusty cooley, jason becker, michael romeo, joe stump, mattias etc
so we might have alot of misunderstanding here _________________ gapnap.com

how do we define shred is depend on our exposure and understanding of shred concept but i also agree with gapster for his shred definition. _________________ Gelanggang guitar : http://guitarden.starahead.com |

we talked about the issue of shred a while back....i think its still in the post.
but in this issue in my opinion what the magazine is suggesting is that the shredding element in bands nowadays is blooming once again like it was in the 80s.
it was not gone during the 90s totally but we can see that during the 90s there were few bands which incorporated the shred element in their playing hence it was thought that it was not the trend during that era. but now i can see a lot of bands are incorporating the shred element in their music. recently i was introduced to a band called Avenged Sevenfold. damn it was like symphony-x.
i can see nowadays that the influence of yngwie malmsteen, paul gilbert and others are beginning to grow like it was during the 80s. i should say that thanks to guys like gilbert, yngwie, kotzen, moore, romeo, angelo and all the other shredders who shred through the 90s eventhough it was not as popular as it was in the 80s that we the new generation were able to appreciate technical values in guitar playing.
without their constant shred it would not be possible for the shred to come back again like it was. these are the heroes.
so i guess this is some of the main point of what the mag is talking about in my opinion.
btw, i consider vai a shredder eventhough he seldom shreds in his music but hell yeah he can shred baby...trust me on this one. |

I miss the late 80's and 90's...hopefully this will be a revival.
Yep...some may argue that Vai, EVH may not be true blue shredders...but we know that they can shred if they want to The early VH albums do have EVH doing fast alternate picking stuff etc. etc. |

No lah...just a matter of differences of personal subjective interpretation, which is not important anyway
The most important thing is, we all love pretty much the same bunch of guitar players...shred or no shred rite? |

this is our opinion to classify shredders..check em out..
we think that satch n vai should be call traditional shred..because if anybody really wants to go into shred..satch and vai are the first to check out ... _________________ gapnap.com
