Interestingly, for the swing blues, you got to be careful to use the "blue b5" note! can use it in some situations, but cannot simply "tembak" it everywhere, it actually sounds "off" most of the time. maybe that's why the site I mentioned analysed it as a set of Myxolydian scales, but my simple mind just thinks of it as a typical Blues scale with some modified rules:
e.g assuming it's a 12-bar swing blues in A, a solo like
over the "A" chord : b3 - 3 - 5 - 6 - 8 - b7 - 6- 5- 4 -5 -4 - b3 -1
(The notes are C - C# - E - F# - A - G - F# - E - D - E - D - C - A)
*notice that
1) it sounds wrong if you try to come down using the 3 note, got to use b3,but going up you can fit the 3 note easily
2) it's hard to use the 4 note when going up, but easy when coming down!
(OK the b7 is the G note, I better use the 7 to mean the maj7 Ab note, since standard convention seems to be like that)
over the D9 and the E9 chords, can still think in terms of A blues scale but somehow the b6 note comes into play..... what the heck but still easier than thinking in terms of 3 Myxolidian scales.
but here's the link for the "proper" Myx-scales method of doing Swing Blues in case anyone wants to analyse it:
http://www.swingblues.com/guitar-lessons/Scales.htm
I use my simpler method because I can't think that much while playing, it interferes with my Guinness intake
Cheers! |
