How do you guys get so good in English language? Do you interact more in that language? I'm not good in speaking and listening. How would you suggest me to be good in that language? Thanks.

Learn the colorful words first.

Bad words is the first to start.

Be confident with the way you speak.

I still remember the first time I was forced to speak in English. I had to speak to my pen-pal (a girl) in English...though we could actually speak in Hokkien instead...haha.

I come from a Chinese school background in a small town though Chinese is my worst language. It's like some kind of a taboo among the students if you ever speak in English...this mindset regularly reduced at the secondary school. Upon leaving secondary school, we have no choice but to speak in English everyday in KL (I cannot speak Cantonese). Speaking in Malay among Chinese is another "no no".

One way to train your listening skill is to watch English movies without reading the subtitles (switch off the subtitles if u have a choice).

The only way to speak is to speak in English regularly without getting too worried about the grammar or do any mistake....ignore those who laugh at you. Trust me, I've seen a lot of people improving this way. I still do a lot of mistakes when speaking in English...sometimes nobody realises it. I even notice some Mat Salleh speaking English with wrong grammar....some of their English is worse than us. Just don't be shy about making mistakes.

By the way, I always avoid colourful words that I am unfamiliar with. I always avoid trying to be too smart that eventually leads to unnecessary mistake. Use simple words if you're not confident.

Cool! Thanks for the recommendations. Smile

Nowadays, english movies got translation especially on the tv. I can't help it but my eyes will always want to look at the subtitles. Another option I do is to watch old english movies like cowboys movies. They got no subtitles. The only thing that irritate me is their slang or the way they use certain sentences.

My friend also advise me to not worry much about grammar when speak. The thing that afraid me is to sounds Manglish, Singlish.. whatever you wanna call it.

Btw, what is COLOURFUL WORD? Any example?

there was this loveable young chinese girl who was struggling to speak english while i was in Australia..
Hehe, feisty girl, she'd shout at the people who ridiculed her saying that she's learning and its ok to make mistakes and stop being a f**king bastard about it. Ofcourse all this was conveyed in that oh broken english which sometimes made things even worse.
She got pretty good after a while, after she started hanging out with this outcast white girl who hung out with the asian folk....sigh...it was almost erotic the way they hugged each other during graduation...hehe

Er... sorry ler.. i from small already speak english because its my first language.

I only learn how to speak chinese when i was 18 years old but still sucks.

Well for me. learning english is very easy. start from learning the badwords.. coz each foul words can be words, if u mix and match it like.

Take for example. Past tense

I fucked you before

Present tense

You were fucking with my uncle

Future tense

f**k you to hell

Theres always the Malay English learning cassettes..the kind that talks so slowly that you'd think they were retarded.

"Saya hendak mencari pekerjaan di sini"
- "i would like to sell myself here"

"Saya hendak pukul awak"
- "I would like to hit on you"

"Anda telah di bakar"
- 'You are fired"

hehehe...i would love to make one of those for the white tourists here.

I remember hearing a stupid nonsense pop song with a lyric "bad boy...good girl". In our case, it's the opposite....huntress=bad girl...jailhouserock=good boy....hahahaha...thanks to the bad words...hahaha

colourful words to me are those words with "tion", etc that could shorten a long sentence into one word.

Don't worry about Manglish or Singlish....u r in Malaysia after all....this is normal mah....(hehe...Manglish has surfaced). Eventually, u can improve by getting rid of the "lah", "mah", etc slowly. For my case I have to get rid of them eventually because sometimes I need to deal with Mat Salleh at work.

If u want Mat Salleh or Siti Salleh accent...I think Huntress has a bit of that accent especially while she is on the phone....u can learn from her...hahaha. Even Joe Kidd has a bit of accent too.

The accent thing is neither a good nor bad point to me. I am neutral. I used to have Indian accent when speaking in Mandarin after mixing with Indians too often...hahaha

me accent?

hhahaha thats my voice ler..... as i said, english is my first language, i grew up speaking the language.

Anyway, the most important thing is confident. don't be shy when you make mistakes in your english.
then you will learn.

To be honest, my BM was crap, i couldn't speak it properly because i always have an english accent in it.
But do you know eversince i mix with the people in i-bands, i improved my BM so much.

well, I used to be quite ok in BM when I was in Perlis because it's a very commonly used language since the majority of the people there are Malays.

After "migrating" to KL after form 5, my BM is damn shitty now....
