Sometimes, money seems to be the taboo topic of the indepedent music scene. Many people in the scene do not understand that someone eventually has to pay the bill for any activity done for the independent scene. The following are the examples:
1. Gig organiser has to pay for the venue...and of course the nasty permit
2. Venue owner has to pay for electricity bill, water bill, rental and the nasty permit.
Please bear in mind that petrol, phone calls, electricity bill, water bill, etc do not come cheap these days.
I also don't blame some bands asking for reasonable amount of payment for playing in gigs. However, poor organisers may not be able to afford it - the organiser may have issue trying to cover the payment for the venue in the first place.
There are some bands that are willing to pay for free. Without naming who you are, I would like to say a big thank you to those bands and give them a big salute. Some of them are even willing to pay a small amount of money to contribute.
A lot of bands tend not to invite anyone to the gig. I think this is very bad for the scene. Imagine 10 bands are playing. Each of them bring 5 friends to the gig. We'll have 50 people that will listen to the bands. Potentially some may become fans of the other bands unknown to them.
On the other hand, if you don't do so, there is a possibility that you'll be playing without any audience except for a few band members from other bands.
This is the reason some gig organisers impose a policy for bands to bring in their friends. Without this policy, most of the Malaysian tend to take it for granted and I have notice that a lot of bands do not even have the initiative to promote themselves.
The reason I am writing now is because of some criticisms trigger me to do so. Some people are wondering why Giggers has to impose on the band member to purchase a meal in order to play. FYI, the meal is NOT costing RM50 or RM100. You may find below RM5 meal in the menu.
1. An alternative way to avoid purchasing the meal is to bring in 7 of your friends to cover the cost
2. As I have mentioned earlier, the cafe has to pay for electricity bills, water bills, permit, etc.
3. The cafe has to pay for the workers in order to run the place
4. An opened mike concept will be applied after the launching. Meaning anyone can perform the accoustic set. Where can you find a venue without such restriction? Karaoke is not for bands and it is strictly for cover songs. If you want this concept to carry on, the cafe needs your help in return. Otherwise, it can close shop after 1 month. |
