I visited Malaysia last year
and bought quite a few cd's and vcd's of Malaysian bands.

Can anyone give me some suggestions as to bands on here that i might like?

My favourite style of music is Punk/Rock/Metal/Indie
but i listen to all genres of music and i love to hear new bands.

Thanks Very Happy and don't laugh at the foreign guy Smile

All the Malay music i bought i have liked.

Some of the cd's i bought were:

Spider
XPDC: Malay Rugged
A.C.A.B: Skinhead for life
4 sides of OI
May

Welcome to i-bands bro! We're extremely elated to have somebody from Australia amongst us!
You can try our site radio to sample a mix and match combination of various genres on i-bands.net:
BODE'S BAND BOX RADIO
The radio does not in any way represent all genres that we have here since it's just a 'snapshot' of what i-bands has to offer. It also does not necessarily represent the best acts here since new cooler outfits are appearing at a faster rate than the what the radio DJ can cope Smile

For Metal, checkout these guys: Virus Sound
http://www.i-bands.net/audiovault/bands/154/music.php

For signed acts, do check out Metalasia(Shred Metal) and hard rock outfits Search, Wings and Lefthanded. There are many more great acts that i will add later when I can remember them.

Hope you enjoy your stay here in the warm and sunny i-bands forums! Smile

P.S. Which Spider album did you just bought?

I like music alot - so when i went to the record store
i asked the guy working there what some good local bands were
he put me on to OAG, but i liked the look of the ACAB cd so i bought that as well. I know ACAB have changed now, but that cd Skinhead 4 Life is a very refreshing cd.

I was going to go to Rock The World, but i missed it bt a few days Sad

I am on myspace and i have chatted to the lead singer of Offside - they are a cool band.

Thanks alot for the links i will check them out Very Happy

I live in Victoria about 300 kms from Melbourne.

My favourite places in Malaysia are Kuala Lumpur and Georgetown, Penang.

It is a beautiful country.

Thanks for the help Very Happy

The Spider album i bought was a 2cd Live album.
I think it is live in KL, but I can't say for sure, my cd collection isn't in any sort of order Smile

I was amazed that most of the local people spoke about American Bands or English bands - when the local scene is very good in Malaysia.

Even the Pop music there sounds good - it doesn't here Very Happy

I heard a bit of Traditional Malay music in Kota Kinabalu - and i liked it very much.

ACAB's old materials that you have are good stufff...sadly they'd suddenly became a brit-pop. It's like THe Exploited suddenly wanted to become Oasis...haha. Wattie and Liam are two different creatures man!

btw - since you're for the land of Oz, ever heard of Cromok? Well, this is a legendary thrash metal Malaysian band which has it roots back to Australia (or is it NZ?) since it was formed when the band members were studying engineering there back in late 80s...

anyone has some sample url links for Cromok to give out bro here? U have to listen to the gorgeous 'Misty'...and the great intro to 'Metallurgical'...

U have XPDC too...great stuff man!

But your malay rock search will not be over if you'd not picked up Search - try to get their older stuff - brilliant!

gidday mate!

I suggest that you listen to Butterfingers old stuff (Grunge) http://www.butterfingers.com.my || http://www.myspace.com/butterfingers and Koffin Kanser (Metal) www.myspace.com/koffin69kanser
Welcome aboard Wink
My friends borrowed all of my Butterfingers and Koffin Kanser CD and they never return it

Since you like indie music, here are some of my recommendation:

1. Nice Stupid Playground
2. The Fridays
3. Bittersweet
4. Lightcraft - they're not Malaysians but Indonesians studying in Malaysia
5. The Drives
6. Lucy In The Loo
7. A Mantle The Sea (I have a few copies of the album with me)

Also check out the following young punk band:

1. Civil Disorder

Most of them are still pretty "underground" and you may have problem getting them at the stores. The best way is to contact them directly.

From my following myspace account, you may reach most of them except A Mantle The Sea. I think they have a site in i-bands anyway:

http://www.myspace.com/umbrella_records

Good luck with your quest...

P.S. I am a big fan of Aussie band, Ratcat. Their albums are rare here and I am still searching Smile

Ratcat were a cool band - Simon Day the lead singer actually reformed Ratcat for a show in 2006
I think it was just a one-off show though Smile
