WTF is Mixing and Mastering?
MIXING
usually is the process of combining all the recorded materials onto a stereo track. the process involved balancing the sounds, applying healthy amounts of equalisations (EQ), dynamic processings(compressors, noise gates, limiters, expanders), automations, adding effects, etc, etc.
balancing - an easy one. put the recorded materials roughly like how you want them to sound in according the volume. pan them to make a stereo image.
equalisations - shaping sound to make them sit in the mix. each instruments got their own frequencies. let say the relation of kick and bass.. you dont want the kick's frequencies collide too much with bass'; resulting both compete for the same frequencies ending up eating headroom of the mix. also used to shape the sound you after.
dynamic processing - compressions especially. again, let talk about kick. no matter how punchy your kick is, you still need compression to make it tighter and under control. it's not unusual that drummer tends to hit it louder sometimes, especially after drum rolls. compression helps controlling the wild drummings to be ok,as well as to make it sound punchier. some use it to get its colourations. ENUFF. THIS IS FAQ'S.
automations - ever heard some vocals or guitars 'flying/moving' around the stereo image? this is what i meant here.
effects - vocals are usually recorded 'dry'. you want to give some 'life' to it. so put some reverbs. use it for creative purpose as well (do whatever you like!).
MASTERING
the hardest discipline of all. i'd try to make laymen terms as posibble.. to make it easy, mastering is about MAKING YOU MIX AS LOUD AS YOUR FAVOURITE CDS WITHOUT DESTROYING THE ARCITECHURE OF THE MIX. Also as final resort to make your not-so-good mix translate 'ok' in all playback systems (iPOD's, hi-fi's, car cd player, etc, etc). compressions at this stage helps make your mix sounds punchier. usually the process involved some equalisations, compressions/limitings, stereo enhancing. i could write in details, but thanks.
p/s.. i know what im talking about. , but i wont say you guys are bodoh sombong..and definately im not sunoffrostlight. LOL! |
