Not sure that a hotplate will give you any noise reduction, noise is generally relatively constant to the audio signal, so by effectively turing down the volume, whether with a volume control or some attenuation device, yes you also turn down the noise, but the relationship of nosie `to signal is still the same - does this make sense. I can't see how hotplate would reduce noise, not that I've studied it??

If you put the MV at full volume, your amp will sound the same as if the MV was not there, the nice thing about an MV is you can get loud clean or loud tube distortion and anything in between, without having to crank the amp to marshall earsplitting terror.

For clean, MV up and input Gain down, for more fat distortion, MV down and input gain up.

Without an MV, for clean you must run the amp softer and for distortion, it has to be loud. I guess this where the hotplate's or attenuator are also useful.

Cheers

I got this from THD's website;
Quote:
Built-in Noise Reduction
The THD Hot Plate® is the only attenuator on the market with built-in noise reduction to reduce the hiss and hum between notes. We've designed a passive, single-ended noise reduction system which provides approximately 10 dB of broad band noise reduction without gating or pumping, and without affecting the tone of the amp. A by-product of the noise reduction circuit is that it generates light as you play. The harder you play, the brighter it glows.

Not sure how to technically explain that, but from my experience I do notice less hums when playing at fairly same level as without hotplate. My amp wasn't that noisy anyway and my guitar is properly shielded and uses humbucker so I can't comment much on that part. My best guess is it's just a simple high pass filter that reduces some of the higher frequency buzz and in overall reduces what we perceived as 'volume' of the noise.

Do post some pictures of the cab when you have some time here or on your website. Oh, I've tried to google for Junction amp without luck, can you please give me the direct link to your website? Thanks Smile

I could use a Hotplate for testing, that would be cool. These things must cost RM1000+ right? Does anyone sell them in KL and how much.

If you want one of these as a kinda MV control, then wow, I would consider this expensive. Adding a MV to asn amp requires one dual gang potentiometer, some wire and solder!

Had a look at their site and quite confused about their claimed noise reduction. Single ended noise redcution circuits normally work like a dynamic tone control tuned to the noise frequency, i.e. as the guitar volume decreases, suddenly the noise becomes more notiecable so the noise frequency is automatically turned down. Now they claim their single ended noise reduction is passive, which means it does not work dynamically like I explained. "Passive" to me soumnds liek a fixed filter, i.e. a hum notch filter and a hiss nothch filter, which permanently notch these frequencies out, but this would then affect the tone of the amp/guitar.

It sounds like sales crap to me ... but I could be proven wrong!

I'll post some pictures when my amps/cabs are ready. My web sites suck, nothing there yet, will also post when there is something useful.

I am in the midst of renovating my studios, so rather than PM you, I'll post a note here, when the studio & showroom is open for business and anyone can come around and check us out, try the amps etc.

I was interested in your 2 x 12 cabinet, did you get this made locally or did you buy in.

Ah okay, I know the ones, it the same as mine as I worked with Nik on teh design of these, a combo cab size which can be assembled as a speaker cab only or a combo cab by adding or removing one panel.

Well you will be happy then.

Yeah should be around that price if brand new. I bought mine used from the US for $210. The market is manipulated by them so it'd be great if you can come up with cheaper alternatives. I've seen a few DIY projects on how to make attenuators and it shouldn't be anywhere close to or higher than rm150.
