The first review is in and SONAR 5 Producer Edition is a huge hit with Computer Music magazine, receiving their Editor's Choice, Performance, and Value for Money awards. In addition, SONAR 5 Producer Edition received a "9/10" overall rating. You can buy the Winter 2005 issue of Computer Music at fine music retailers to read the entire review. Below are some highlights:

Value: "The new version of SONAR packs some serious power. Cakewalk seem hell-bent on giving their users everything they could ever need in one package, and with a little help from their friends at Roland and rgc:audio, they've managed to include some new toys that will have their competitors scrabbling to catch up."

Instruments: "SONAR's own compliment of instruments has grown with each new version of the program, so it's no surprise to find that version 5 comes loaded with a selection of new synths, samplers, and more."

Loop support: "SONAR has always been ahead of the game when it comes to loop support...Cakewalk have now added RXP, a REX player. This simple instrument can play back not just REX2 files, but also SF2 loops. Pretty handy, we think."

V-Vocal: "We have to confess being blown away by the new V-Vocal processing...the fact that V-Vocal resides in SONAR makes it a lot more convenient than either Melodyne or V-Synth. It's going to be a challenge not to overuse this one."

Perfect Space: "V-Vocal alone makes it worth SONAR 4 users paying the upgrade price, but Cakewalk have also been so good enough to toss a convolution reverb into the pot. Known as Perfect Space, this is a real-time impulse-based reverb that comes stocked with excellent presets...absolutely incredible."

MIDI: "MIDI has been given a lot more attention in general this time around. There's 'inline MIDI'—this displays MIDI notes and controller information in the track pane—and the piano roll has been given a few tweaks that ease the processes of step-entry and MIDI editing. Cakewalk have never forgotten their roots in MIDI sequencing, and they continue to serve the MIDI musician even in these audio-centric days."

Overall: "We were shocked and delighted to discover a program that brings some serious new professional features to the table. Very few DAWs are this complete...upgrade is compulsory."

V-Vocal is a vocal processor that does pitch correction on notes and phrases, corrects timing, edits formants and dynamics, and can add vibrato.

Gotta admit, the V Vocal works really well and it allows me to work fast.

I think Roland got this one right!

Cakewalk’s Sonar now supports VST 2.4 plug-ins, expanding its capabilities on the Windows x64 platform. Version 5.2 also permits MIDI outputs from VST instruments and supports up to 4096 MIDI channels to any Rewire device, instead of the 16 previously available. Cakewalk's other improvements include support for Waves VST plug-ins, improved integration with hardware control surfaces and a number of smaller bug fixes. Sonar v5.2 is available for registered Sonar 5 users to download on-line.

New soft synth from Cakewalk

Rapture virtual wavetable synth for Mac and PC
Following the launch of Dimension Pro, Cakewalk have produced a second cross-platform software synthesizer.
Rapture combines a non-aliasing resampling synth engine with sophisticated modualtion capabilities.
Each patch can blend up to six different 'Elements' — independent stereo sound generators, each with a multi-waveform wavetable oscillator, ring modulator and two multi-mode filters with lo-fi and drive effects.
There are over 40 envelope generators, LFOs and step generators per patch, and effects and EQ can be applied separately to each Element or globally.
Rapture can operate as a VST, RTAS, Audio Units or Direct X (32-bit and 64-bit) plug-in

SONAR 6.0.1 Maintenance Release

The information in this article applies to:

* SONAR 6 Producer Edition
* SONAR 6 Studio Edition

New Enhancements:

* MIDI Controller/Control Surface plug-ins can now filter only the assigned MIDI messages instead of entire MIDI channels. This allows a MIDI controller that only uses a single MIDI port to be used as a controller and ACT surface at the same time. This capability has been implemented in the ACT MIDI Controller, Edirol PCR-M30 and Cakewalk Generic Surface plug-ins.
* Improved multiprocessing performance at high latency when many AudioSnap events are present in tracks.

Notable Fixes:

* A crash could occur after slip-stretching audio clips multiple times.
* AudioSnap ‘Quantize to Pool’ did not always obey the selection, and unselected tracks could sometimes be quantized.
* A crash could occur under rare circumstances when using AudioSnap ‘Quantize to Pool’ to quantize the selection to the time ruler musical pool.
* MIDI Note Durations were not maintained properly after using the ‘Set Measure/Beat at Now’ command.
* Control Surface Data could echo and be recorded to MIDI tracks when manipulating ACT controls. The ACT MIDI Controller, Edirol PCR-M30 and Cakewalk Generic Surface plug-ins now properly filter these messages.

After installing the 6.0.1 Maintenance Release, please see the ReadMe file for more information. This download includes the English, French, German and Spanish updates.

Please note you must have SONAR 6.0 installed in order to run this update.
