How do you tell your drummer to stop thinking about speed and instead concentrate on tone, timing, phrasing, etc ?

ko ketuk je kepala dia.

kasi la dia nengok instructional video ka. but few of my drummer friends improved or terbukak mata utk belajar more lepas dengar stuffs from Acid Jazz bands. Even my drummer is now much2 better from the time he played with Atom and Mega Very Happy eh even my bassist pun dah ada lotsa ideas after that. Laughing

Ketuk kepala dia? adui!!! Wink

You see, in our culture (malay mostly) sometimes it is difficult to say certain thing yang straight 'on your face' kind of thing like for example:

"Dude, you play out of tempo. Can you please follow the exact tempo"?

"You're too fast, how am I gonna solo over that chord progressions?"

"How can the singer sing when the tempo is faster than before, could you please kindly follow the exact tempo like yesterday?"

We're afraid of hurting someone when we say that kind of stuff. It happens to me lor. Do you think that questions above are okay?

the question is okay to me.. but the way you utter the question is important. its not what are you saying but how are you saying.. just dont be too "lemah lembut" and also not too serius..

hmm thats my opinion la..

and i agree with you guys, drum should cocentrate on groove, tempo and consistency.. same goes to Bass..

to me speed is not everything..

cakap saja.better than keeping it in. you'll find that once you start saying things upfront all will be ok hehe.as long as you dont say it like an asshole lah.

ya betul tu..show them jazzdrum videos.they will be inspired.

just say "play slower..we cant keep up".. hehe

At least kalau tak terer, tapi down to earth and sanggup nak belajar tak per la...or ego besar, tapi memang terer pun, we still can live with that...

Tapi, kalau dia ego dan sensitif jer banyak, tapi tak terer...sack his ass off.

agreed with bode...

kalau dier sensitif sgt... get a new one....
ha haha...

i know alot of newbie drummer that plays fast...but s*cks big time...
just can play certain types of strokes....
mostly punks n grunges...

my experiences with those drummers
" ur playing doesn't match the song ... try find a suitable stroke.. try to go slower" ....

haha..
a drummer that can't go slow???
a drummer that can't control his speed???
that drummer s*cks big time...
sure tak penah pegi music class....
sure suke main punkrock songs haha...
sure suka tibai drum sesuka ati...

no effense in my words..

No la! I get some idea to tell him properly in a very polite manner.
That's what I mean. Razz

Well actually, I've told him like that before but to no avail. *sigh*
Though, he don't go to any music class, I'd still consider him as a good drummer.

Anyway, any drummer here? I want to know your thought about this matter. Very Happy

im not a drummer...

yes i agreed that theres drummer who doesn't go to music class but still good...

been trough your stage where my drummer exactly like that...
some people doesn't to whats ur saying... and considered ur nagging ....
haha..

my first drummer was s*cks and dont want to be open minded
and just for a few month he ran out from the band
haha..

and i get myself a new open drummer...
this guy doesn't just play with us...
he share's everything...
and he still plays with me
because I PLAY MUSIC THAT HE WANTs....

sum advice...
haha sumtimes main laa sama lagu2 'speedo' dier tuh....
let him get the influence from 'slow' songs... (force if have to haha)

in band u needs understanding and tolak ansur...
"duhh"
