nice thread. wei...apa cite sheffield je ni?
i was in kent, canterbury circa 95 - 97. i think i'm one of the two m'sian blokes there who were more a bit more into guitars than chicks or hifis...hehe...
jengofett - sometime in 96 i did attend sheffield's malaysia nite...but not sure if this was the same one that u mentioned. I saw the 'demonstration'...hizbi ke apa ntah dgn flyers. To me that was bollocks but hey, everybody had to be somebody those days...lucky i was always in the neutral zone.
they said there were bands performing but sadly for that particular m'sian nite, the band performance were slated last. Becoz most of the earlier show there got a bit draggy, the band slot was inadvertently pushed a bit too late. So due to that, none of the bands got to play even though they already had their equipments all ready to be fired up on stage...so tak sempat ler tgk sapa2 main.
Kinda frustrated actually - coz i came all the way from kent to see m'sian musicians in sheffield showing their stuff - but ended up seeing just some other useless showcase there...hehe
Actually, i was mainly there to see the drumming skills of 'Lan setan'...anyone heard of him? coz i invited him to play for my adhoc band in kent for m'sian nite kent a couple of weeks before...
Since he's one fine drummer, i was a bit malu coz i play sucky guitars those days...what to do? my idol was the ramones, so shredding or extended solos was something alien to me back then...hehe. So, to complement my limited guitar playing skilss, we did some silly raya songs instead. But it was all good! |

nice activity u have there. wish i'm still in england now. cool memories i had back then...now that the exchange rate is like soo ridiculuos, i wonder when i'm gonna get back there.
Got an idea. When r u coming back for good? maybe when ur back in m'sia u cud try to organise a gig of sort here for all ex-UK / US students??...
i'm sure a lot of us ex-students from there who are 'kaki jamming' whos like getting stressed out with their current jobs would like to get reacquianted back to the good old days of rockin out...
btw - do try to ask around any old seniors there if they'd ever heard of Lan setan...just curious to now if this brader still ada lagi legacy in sheffield or not...during my time, everybody knew that he eats and sleep drums when he was there...hehe.. |

I was the one who discovered him back in 1990 or 1991 I think...that time I left the 'Sheffield band' and was planning to form another outfit...with new fresh 'hungry' musicians..."Lan Double Pedal" is probably Lan Setan (but Lan Double Pedal left for M'sia before 1993 or 1994, so maybe we're talking about a different person here)
Anyway, the Lan that I played with is definitely somebody who has real passion for drums, rather than the glam, and he's good...Neil Peart is his no. 1 hero...and we would chat about Rush for ages...
The only one gig that we had in Keele University in 1990 or 1991 was probably one of the best gig I had... |

nice story there bode...
i think that's probably a different lan setan / drum pedal...
but it's quite strange that only sheffield produces good drummers by the same nickname....hehe...
kudo - heard anything about Kent? just curious about the uni nowadays...back in my days the place is quite famous coz of it's relatively 'hot' m'sian girls'...well, i do admit that our girls were kinda cute...(no wonder i didnt travel that much back then, preferred to stay in the uni)
but that is another story...
even heard that some uni even wanted to have a soccer match with us in kent just for the sake of checking out the girls there...haha..sadly, we dont have that many good guys to play footie...heck, i dont even play!
oke. let get back to talk about music now... |
