hmm during the early 80's i was still in my diapers la........
but i get to see my dad in action with his long hair and guitar
that time he was a student... so i will sit under his table, when he is studying..
then tiba2 when he is bored, he will plug in his guitar and play a mini gig for me.
so yeah.. grew up with hootie and the blowfish, and mostly deep purple.
but it was awesome la..
the best thing when it time for me to sleep, he will play his guitar for me. until when i was 8 years old, he concentrated in his career edi, so his guitar collect dust. _________________ "Thus let my enemy's blood be spilled

This was a post in the same thread in jamtank...I thought it would be kinda relevant to post it here as well...since it helps the younger generation to explore the roots of where the present rock music came from:
calibre2001 wrote: | Bode,
I was never into 80s hair/poodle metal (of the cheesy Van Halen variation) though I admire their wizardry skills on the guit. Anyway , what are some essential tunes that, in your opinion, defines tt era and should be learnt for starters for folks interested to endeavour into tt stuff? At the mo, only V Halen comes into mind.... |
I dont mean to put down the current crop of new school rock bands. Though I dont dig their music, that doesnt give me the right to put them down...and this is out of respect and because it's a free world. But when some people are beginning to get the wrong impression of the 80's rockers, and also some 'new school' rockers (whom I'm not at all impressed with their musicianship) start to get all big headed(as apparent in some interviews on mags and TV), I thought I might give my opinion on this subject.
80’s rock music was what I grew up on, and to be frank I would love to write pages and pages or even a book on it, but I’ll restrict myself to just a brief introduction. I’m not saying that all music from the 80’s early 90’s were good, that era has it’s fair share of bad Van Halen/Whitesnake clones. While guitar heroes ruled the world in the 80’s, there came a time towards the late 80’s where guitarists were trying to out do each other too much in terms of speed/technique, and guitar playing became more of a sport of ‘who’s the fastest/most difficult soloist’ rather than art. Every day, there seems to be a new album by a young guitarist who is faster than the previous one and it became ridiculous. I am by no means a technical snob in the sense that I only respect and listen to ‘soloists’. There are a lot of great guitarists who aren’t soloists as well, and these people also made an incredible impact in rock history…U2’s The Edge is a great example. Punk is simple, but it’s got attitude and I hear music and emotion in it. But what I was lamenting earlier is that even with these shortcomings in that era, there were great music/musicians to listen to, and I’m very frustrated that rock music today does not offer the same. Amongst the current bands ,some bands for instance like Greenday has got my respect for having the great ability to write great hooks(even though I’m not a fan of their music, but I do respect them). In the 80’s I used to hate rock bands like Poison and rap music, but after listening to the current crop of rock bands which rely on image and aggression alone whose music failed to spark an interest in me, I’m beginning to think the ‘crap’ music/musicians from the 80’s were not too bad! Now, I would rather listen to rap music rather than nu-metal. It’s not I’m telling what’s right or wrong…it’s just a matter of taste.
This introduction is by no means complete, as I similarly I can go on forever with a whole list of songs to listen and enjoy, but I hope this can be useful for starters and a brief introduction to 80’s rock. If you can get hold of the videos of these songs, it’s even better, because the cool thing about 80’s rock is the shows boast a lot of visual elements as well…with the musicians strutting their stuff on stage and the pompous representations of themselves(e.g. Van Halen’s drum set boasting 4 bass drums, Steve Vai’s heart shaped guitar, Yngwie twirling his guitar and David Lee Roth's leg-split jumps) Lol!:
Hear n Aid - Stars
"On May 20 and 21, 1985, 40 artists from the metal community gathered at A&M Records Studios to participate in the making of a record called "Stars," as a part of a very special project known as Hear 'N Aid. The "Stars" single and a video documentary on the making of the record was used to raise money for famine relief efforts in Africa and around the world. These 40 artists, along with hundreds of other volunteers, donated their time and talent over four months to make Hear 'N Aid a reality. "Stars" is a plea for unity in the fight against world hunger."

Night Ranger
Queensryche
Quiet Riot
Rough Cutt
Spinal Tap
Twisted Sister
Vanilla Fudge
W.A.S.P.
Y&T
The guitar solos were played by:
Graig Goldy/ Eddie Ojeda
Vivian Campbell/ Brad Gillis
Neal Schon/ George Lynch
Yngwie Malmsteen/ Vivian Campbell
George Lynch/ Carlos Cavazo
Brad Gillis/ Craig Goldy/ Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser
This album has got it all…great vocals, great guitarists…great songs…and it grabs your balls from the very first chord of the opening track.
Whitesnake:
Still of the Night
Here I Go Again(1987)
Crying in the Rain
Iron Maiden
These guys ruled the 80’s as well. Classic hard rock.
The Number of the Beast
The Trooper
Aces High
Judas Priest
They invented heavy Metal…period. Try to find somebody who can sing like Rob Halford…please…because most of today’s rock singers whimper like wimps…
Electric Eye
Screaming for Vengeance
Freewheel Burning
Black Sabbath - Live Evil
This album is probably the darkest album of all time…featuring live versions of the classics during the Ronnie James Dio era. Without these guys, there would not be black/death or whatever metal there is today…and these guys are masters of their craft…(this is not mere screaming/groaning and jumping around…Ronnie James Dio’s vocal prowess is still unmatched today; he can control his vocals from a whisper to a scream and everything in between…while Tony Iommi is not only a master of the heaviest riffs…that man can solo till the fretboard melts as well…not just mindless dropped D power chord chugging. This man don’t need to go drop D to make the other current metal guitarists sound like pussies.
Heaven and Hell
Children of the Sea
Mob Rules
Van Halen
I’m a Van Halen fanatic…period. Got all their albums and read all interviews on Eddie Van Halen from 1978 to the present day.
Jump---it aint Heavy rock…but it showed that heavy rock and rollers can do the pop thing and rake money from the charts as well. This went to no.1 on the Pop charts! Lol!…though pop…the solo is still blazing.
Panama
Hot for Teacher
Girl Gone Bad
Drop dead legs
Ozzy Osbourne
I wore 3 Ozzy necklaces at the same time when I was 17…nuff said. That time, I mourned on the day Randy Rhoads died…I don’t speak to anybody on that day.
Mr. Crowley
Crazy Train
Revelation Mother Earth
Jake E Lee...fiery blazing solos...
Ozzy Osbourne - Bark at the Moon
Dio:
Holy Diver
Don’t Talk to Strangers
Rainbow in the Dark
If you call me a bad Gary moore clone, I will frankly take it as a compliment! Serious! Lol!
Gary Moore:
Victims of the Future
Murder in the Skies
Wishing Well
These can keep you busy for the meantime…
Man..this is one long and colourful post...I should get an award for this... |
