i usually go for the first one, eventhough practising certain licks or scales can be tiring and u might get bored easily... i have 2 instructional vcd's (Marty Friedman and Ritchie Kotzen) which i watched only twice and then put it back on the shelf! hahaha...

but, by practising licks / scales, you can be a better player in terms of song-writing, creativity, plus adding more colour to your solos! There's no easy way to become a good guitar player - all it takes is practise, practise, and more practise... that's why i'm still no good coz i hate to practise!!!!

but it depends individually.. i have a friend who can do great solo job, arpeggios like hell, but sadly he can't write a single decent song...

kalau nak pergi jauh lagi.. try to memorize the fretboard and scales. so then u can cocentrate on your soul expression while doing your solo job.

p/s: aku pun tak hafal laie..hehhe

Lama mana masa yang diperlukan untuk menguasai teknik yang ko sedang belajar adalah bergantung kepada tahap kefahaman ko terhadap teknk tersebut...

Katakan lah ,yang paling basic, major scales...kita perlu faham cord aggression, harmonics, modes dan pelbagai aspek lagi....takpe tak ur time,,ur finger will follow ur heart
