10. Mogwai Come On Die Young (1999)
Guitarists: Stuart Braithwaite, John Cummings
Scotland’s post-rock heroes took the art of epic understatement to new creative heights on their second album. A flow of sinister melancholy permeates the unfolding drama of Braithwaite’s and Cummings’ playing.
You say: “A record of beautiful, heartbreaking, and yet visceral music.” Lloyd Fay
Download now: Christmas Steps, Ex-Cowboy
Did you know: The album’s title is taken from a Glasgow gang’s graffiti.
9. Jeff Beck Wired (1976)
Guitarist: Jeff Beck
More muscular than its predecessor, Blow By Blow, Wired sees Jeff Beck at his jazz-fushion best: Led Boots rocks hard while Goodbye Pork Pie Hat is a stunning reworking of the Charlie Mingus standard. A true guitar great at the peak of his powers.
You say: “Beck’s best for playing and technique. Just dazzling.” Carl Bradshaw
Download now: Led Boots, Goodbye Pork Pie
Did you know: Wired’s keyboardist was Jan Hammer, later composer of the Miami Vice TV theme.
8. Frank Zappa Hot Rats (1969)
Guitarist: Frank Zappa
Zappa’s first solo album after The Mothers Of Invention isn’t entirely instrumental – Willie The Pimp features a brief Captain Beefheart vocal – but it was the intro jams that snared listeners. This is Zappa the guitarist at full-tilt.
You say: “Incredible composer and soloist who deserves a much bigger audience.” Carlton Schroeder
Download now: Peaches En Regalia, Gumbo Variations
Did you know: Zappa began the sessions for Hot Rats wheelchair-bound after being pushed off a 15-foot stage by an irate fan in London.
7. Yngwie Malmsteen Rising Force (1978)
Guitarist: Yngwie Malmsteen
The debut solo album from the then 21-year-old heralded a frightening guitar talent that countered the Eddie Van Halen school of boozy, rock ‘n’ roll flash with impossibly speedy neo-Classical runs, a blur of alternate picking and lightning harmonic minor arpeggios.
You say: “In spite of the rubber dragon stage sets, this album shows Malmsteen is a serious musician.” Name Here
Download now: Icarus Dream Suite, Black Star
Did you know: Yngwie got his first ‘big break’ by sending a tape to a guitar magazine.
6. Steve Vai Fire Garden (1996)
Guitarist: Steve Vai
Vai attempts to broaden his horizons on this record, resulting in some music that’s surely the heaviest of his career to date. And despite its appearance in this chart, he sings too. More of the former and less of the latter please...
You say: “The perfect mix of guitar craziness and Zappa weirdness.” Rob Banks
Download now: Fire Garden Suite, Little Alligator
Did you know: Vai is a keen apiarist. “Taking care of bees can be a Zen-like experience if you let it be, he says. So, now you know.
5. Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells (1973)
Guitarist: Mike Oldfield
There’s little new that can be said of Tubular Bells: most would have dismissed the idea as madness, but Richard Branson believed and built a business empire. Listen with the lights off.
You say: “Great instrumental rock without pomposity, swords or sorcery.” Adrian Orrom
Download now: Tubular Bells Part II
Did you know: The opening bars of the album provide the chilling soundtrack to the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist.
4. The Shadows Greatest Hits (1963)
Marvin remains one of the most influential guitarists of all time, and his energy and fire made him the Dimebag of his time. This 1963 collection is the best of their many Best Of offerings
Guitarists: Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch
You say: "I normally hate instrumentals, yet still love The Shadows. Just a classic sound." Phil Meade
Download now: Apache, Guitar Tango
Did you know: Cliff helped Hank choose his iconic Fender Stratocaster from a 1959 catalogue.
3. Jeff Beck Guitar Shop (1989)
Guitarist: Jeff Beck
Recording with drummer for hire Terry Bozzio, this album brought Beck’s humungous talent to the fore and the guitar world lapped it up. An astonishing display of innovative guitar playing, some of his techniques remained unexplained at press time.
You say: “He’s the best guitar player around today. It really is that simple.” Huw Grieg
Download now: Savoy, Big Block
Did you know: The album won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Rock album.
2. Joe Satriani Surfing With The Alien (1987)
Guitarist: Joe Satriani
More melodic than Paul Gilbert and more accessible than his one-time student Steve Vai, the New Yorker’s strident touch and effortless style captivated millions with this breakthrough album. The likes of Always With Me, Always With You and Satch Boogie signalled the arrival of a new, true guitar hero.
You say: “A master and his craft.” Tom Langston
Download now: Satch Boogie, Midnight
Did you know: If you don’t get the G3 concept, blame Joe: it’s all his idea...
1. Steve Vai Passion & Warfare (1990)
Guitarist: Steve Vai
Although a tad dated in 2006, this is one of very few albums that changed the course of the guitar forever. Immaculate technique, excellent production, and dammit, great tunes too.
You say: “Vai’s guitar playing is mind-blowing – great tone, great songs and a ton of emotion.” Matthew Muro
Download now: Sisters, The Audience Is Listening
Did you know: Vai believed in the concept of dedicated fasting as an inspirational tool. Don’t try that at home...
Sape lagi ye?
Yusoff Ibrahim (aka Chobib) Goreng-Goreng Aje (2005)
Guitarist: Yusoff Ibrahim (aka Chobib)
You say: “Great!” Hussaini Abdul Karim
Download now: Goreng-Goreng Aje
Did you know: Yusoff Ibrahim (aka Chobib) is a much sought-after sessionist. He plays for RTM orchestra and teaches guitar, arrangement and composition at ASWARA and lends his skills in numerous recordings.
The Quests Call It Shanty (1964)
Guitarist: Reggie Verghese (Mr Guitar)
You say: "Fantastic." Hussaini Abdul Karim
Download now: Shanty, Lenggang-Lenggang Kangkong, Mustapha
Did you know:The Quests got their big break with EMI when they were invited for an audition. They were naturally excited with the news as EMI was the very same label that Cliff Richard and The Shadows recorded for.

Hi Erylasia,
I don't know the definition of the type of music The Shadows or Hank Marvin plays, but it is definitely not 'surf'. I would think The Ventures do that.
Anyway, congratulations to whoever started this wonderful site. Before this I have been visiting practically all the Shadows sites in England and Europe.
Being a newcomer, I hope to learn something from my Malaysian guitarists.
Cheers |
