Assalammualaikum and Hi to everyone....
Newbie here....just an orang tua in his 40s yang baru start main guitar since year 2000. Had bought several gears since then...but never got the guts to tell the wife truthfully about their costs. It's not that I can't afford them but rasa bersalah bila beli benda2 yg doesn't seem to beri benefit to the household or family. So I set standard prices to tell the wife.....i.e
1) guitars & amps & everything else that looks big - at RM200 to RM300 per piece.
2) effects & other small gizmos - at RM50 to RM100 per piece.
Kira...ikut standard harga perfume perempuan la.......so the wife tak bising sangat.
I know, even a dimarz/SD pu is worth more than that....but that's how guilty I feel...hehe. WARNING!....NEVER,NEVER let ur wife follows u to a guitar shop. The only comfort that I normally tell the wife.....I don't play golf or haunt dangdut clubs. I'm most always at home after work and weekends...belajar guitar.
I noticed that some of u young guys are married. So do you feel guilty as well? What do you tell the wife? |

hahaha nice one...
nearer which i can relate... myself early thirties... always told my wife that its an investment for the offspring... hehhe ( well.... my two son 4 & 1 both have the touch for musical gear ...always banging on my guitars & keys) so the wifey cant say much ... its in their blood ... heck i use this excuse to buy gears for me ...
luckily enough for me bought majority of my gears before i got married so no complain there ....
the trick is early month buy every household goods for not to create any unwanted loopholes ... then always go to a mall/shopping areas where there are music stores ... give them your card or cash .... then take few hours to window shops ... works like wonders for me ....
NEVER EVER TOLD THE ACTUAL RETAIL PRICE , what i did was always """ ohh b those are my friends' ...pinjam sekejap aje ...." then if those things still there for a while just say """ i kinda like it and take it "" but never ever tell them you bought you new toys impromtu ....hehehe..
"Maha Bahaya..."
well these modes have managed to save many unwanted "broken homes"

40 muda lagi paaaaak.. !
(1) on a good day, i'd buy the wife a channel no.5, and tell her nothing but the whole truth.
(2) on a passionate day i'd tell her that the 6 guitars and the cute gimos will eventually be for our 3 lovely children, if at all, 30 yrs from now they'd all be collectors items and can be sold for a hefty sum! (the guitars i mean, not the children)
(3) on a bad day ? ... shhh! lie low. use headphone. |

nice move jengo....and gapster, you may have my moral support....from 100 metres away, that is...
Which brings me to the next question.....how do you smuggle in a new purchase into the house..big item of course. You wouldn't want that "beli apa lagi ni?" lecture from the wife would you?
I normally have them stashed inside the boot...before picking up the wife from her office. Yes....I buy gears during weekdays. No one would believe that someone would be crazy enough to drive up all the way to Bentley/CK or Mahogany from Cheras during lunch hour. I thank Tauke Amizan from CK music for his "fit in the boot" expertise help. He knows my plight. But the wife always seems to notice my sudden polite driving.
Smuggling in normally begins at around 11.00pm...."oooo I need to check the gates, honey. U sleep first la" But I was once caught...Heard wife's coming down footsteps while I was dragging the damn thing in...alamak...Quickly dragged it back inside the car......and watered the plants...at 12.00 midnight. Yeah...pathetic. |

one solution, and this works for the single guys out there, is to have a girlfriend/wife who plays! it can't be better. i am NOT talking about having a groupie as a partner, but a musician. a famous example is john petrucci (he has a wife who plays lah, not asking you to marry him. hahaha).
she follows you to the guitar store and admires that taylor 614CE hanging on the rack after a few hours of clothes shopping with you, picks it up and plays beautifully.
and imagine these scenarios:
Quote: | "baaaannggg.... cepat lahh... nanti lambat, bentley habis jual JTM45 tu kang?"
"eh... the kids are asleep, you warm the amp up while i pegi ambik les paul i eh?"
"honey, SURPRISE!!!! I GOT US TICKETS TO SEE METALLICA!!!"
"you got robert keeley to mod my DS-1? you are so sweet! i love you!" |
ini bukan fantasi. these girls are rare, but believe me, they are out there. i know.
i better end this before this stops becoming an i-bands.net entry. hahaha. _________________ "my small self...like a book amongst the many on a shelf.."

hahaha funny story pakcik...
anyway, like bro Jengofett there, usually when i bought second hand item, i just bring it home (tanpa rasa bersalah) and told her that it belongs to a friend. and a few months later, just told her that my friend decided to sell it for a very cheap price... still bebel, but sekejap je heheh...
i've had a RM550 Samick guitar and kept it in my office. never brought it home until i decided to sell it. i told her that a friend asked me to sell the guitar for RM200, but i managed to sell it for RM400. so i have an extra "RM200" to buy some more gadget! i told her: "duit yg datang dari barang muzik, mesti dibelanjakan utk muzik jugak, tak boleh guna utk perbelanjaan keluarga - haram!" hahahaha!
btw, i've just received my wah pedal that i purchased from eBay today, and the item was sent straight to my office (another neat trick). She asked me what i want for this year's anniversary, so there you have it... just have to figure out how to link this wah pedal with the anniversary present thingy... heheh _________________ > facebook
