I guess I'm one the retarded guitarist types, spent so many years trying to play the guitar but never being able to match the whiz kids I see everywhere, but one thing I'm realizing nowadays is that so many guitarists just concentrate on playing solos, and very of us few pay attention to the chords we play........ a big pity because there's a I'm learning now that there's a LOT of "magic" in how good guitarists use chords, and understanding how to play/use chords properly can really improve one's guitaring and make a band so much more pleasant to hear.
I suppose jazz musicians would have a good mastery of how to use chords, but for those who don't play jazz, playing the "right" chords are really important,too......recently I've been analyzing the chords I've been playing for a lot of songs and find I've just been bullshitting most of my life away!
So anyway, I'm now slowly trying to re-learn chords, and I find that trying to work out the "accurate" chords for the songs I really like is helping me discover so much more about how the songwriter structures the song, and also how the band gets to sound pleasant and "rich" without being irritating. (e.g. in an Fmaj7, the bassist could be playing the "E" note instead of "F", but if the chord was F7 then the bassist can't play the "E")
there's a lot of subtle things to be learnt by analyzing how a good song has been arranged. I'm now trying to compile chord arrangements (from a guitarist's perspective) for some of my favourites.
would any of you guys be interested in sharing/discussing chord structures for songs?

yeah you're right man...i guess the thing is some ppl are not into chord theory that much..most of them would prefer to start off with some scales n stuff..but i guess it's all in your music preference..i do think chord-scale relationship ( how to build your chords from a given scale ) etc are very important in finding new chord voicings for writing songs...i've sorta becoming anti fifth powerchord now ha ha due to lack of harmony in it
( unless i'm playing some metal riff le)
itulah 2 sen ku.. _________________ my photoblog - http://sigemok.blogspot.com |

raggy.. you're right.. this is what sham kamikaze and gary hoey told to audience during their guitar clinic. A good example of this kind of guitarist is me myself hehehe..
gary said in his clinic to unlock the fingerboard(get outside the box) while solo is to master the chord first. _________________ Gelanggang guitar : http://guitarden.starahead.com |

that wuld be very good of you !
meanwhile, here's the kind of chord charts i work on nowadays, useful for band practise too, i just pass the charts around so the song structure is clear and everyone in the band can visualize the "story" of the arrangement.

yeah.. same problem with me... i started to pickup guitars becoz of the cool solos n stuff, now after realizing the beuty of chords in music, i'm starting again on chords progression, etc... but i find it hard these days to focus on it becoz of the habit of wanting to play solo all the way... guess bro omar will post something on chords n progression... _________________

well...just say you find beauty in dmaj7-gmaj7/e
you can still solo the notes in the chord formation to get the beauty sound _________________ gapnap.com

We can say its not about to memorize chords, but to understand chords.
basic example, let say A minor Chord. What are the notes taken into account..? which note is the minor note? Where else can we form A minor on the fretboard, If we ignore certain note can we still call it an A minor...?
I believe if we do understand chord, we can simply answer those questions. Tapi aku rasa nak understand chord, lebih mudah kalau kita dah tau scale terlebih dahulu. _________________ Gelanggang guitar : http://guitarden.starahead.com |

100% setuju. Klu boleh selitkan sekali lagu yang boleh dimain dengan chords yang diajar. Certain part pun jadilah. |
