Bob Denver, star of 'Gilligan's Island', dies at 70

Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Bob Denver, who became a TV icon for his role as the bumbling castaway in the beach-bum hat on 'Gilligan's Island',' has died. He was 70.

Denver, who also played beatnik Maynard G. Krebs on the television series 'The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis',' underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year. He died at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Caroline, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent, Mike Eisenstadt.

Denver was born on Jan. 9, 1935, and was a graduate of Loyola University in Los Angeles. He worked as a mailman and an athletic coach and history and math teacher at Corpus Christi Children's School of Pacific Palisades, California, before landing the Krebs's role in 1959 at the age of 24. Dwayne Hickman, also a graduate of Loyola, played his co-star, Dobie Gillis.

When the show ended in 1963, Denver became the first mate on 'Gilligan's Island' for the next three years. He then played Woody Allen's replacement in the long-running Broadway comedy 'Play It Again, Sam'. He also appeared in other TV shows.

It was the reruns of 'Gilligan's Island' that turned the series into a cult-status show, and Denver capitalized on it.

He was the star of the Gilligan-like syndicated show 'Dusty's Trail' (1974) and then was in another castaway comedy, the 1975 Saturday morning children's TV show 'Far Out Space Nuts'. He also was the voice for a cartoon series, 'The new Adventures of Gilligan' (1974-1976) and 'Gilligan's Planet' (1980), and reprised Gilligan in three made-for-TV features based on the original TV series.

So sad...I love Gilligan's Island.....just like I Love Lucy or I Dream of Jeanie...

This series shown on the tv accompanied me when I had jet lag years ago when I was in US during a cold winter month

Rest in peace, Bob Denver.
