Peeps...
I have these stomboxes now: -
Boss HM2, Boss MT2, Ibanez Chorus, Yamaha Delay
Feel like improving the sound, and a bit confused about whether to add a Compressor / Sustainer pedal or an EQ pedal or maybe both? (potentially from Behringer of course!)
So what's the best bet?? I actually don't really understand the purpose of have a Comp/sust - but it looks cool...hehe. So any advice sifus?
I read somewhere that this thing will 'balance' the sound might not capture whatever original dynamics that you wanna capture from yur guitar? Is this true??
And do advice me on the usage of EQ pedal as well....is it necesary?
Last q, with these add-on, will it help to cut down on unwanted 'noise'?
Thanks...

I think, no need for compressor, if u wanna do so plz no boss CS-3, it ill make no defferent at all. Go for other brand compressor or limiter.
1 thing u need a eq after the MT-2 so u can tweak ur distortion sound. for sure dano fish and chip paling silent noise zero (ask deadzid).
And a Overdrive before MT-2 to boost the solo.
For noise u need a noise gate. sug for mxr smart gate or hush pedal. or boss if the two are to rare or too mahal...hehhehe...
MXR Smart gate = rm800 bentley... giler babass. _________________ Maiden, loudness, ACDC, black sabath, deep purple, jimmi and vinnie moore

cheers mate...
actually about the Boss CS-3, i saw Edrie Hashim using it in his chain of effects for tv3 Mentor showcase...if i'not mistaken he put it last in his chain...so tu yang aku dok curious tu apa hasil pakai menatang ni. hmm..i shud have asked him actually!)
nak try survey that new behringer EQ pedal this weekend...cheap i hope! some one do submit a review of these new gems from behringer! I would but it wont be technical coz my guitar effects electronics lingo is very da basic...
so any more views out there regarding this? |

So you buy something because it looks cool? figures....
Anyway a compressor basically is a limiter/expander. On the extremes, when you compress a signal to the max, you are making the quiet loud, and making the loud quiet thus limiting and normalizing the signal. (this also causes unwanted noise to surface. This removes the dynamics of the signal.
You can make a signal sustain when you compress a signal... so you can hold the note hold longer...
Personally, I dont see much point of having a compressor on a live rig. I find the compressor of much more use in a recording situation, when the dynamics of the signal if too great from one part to another. Makes mixing easier.
In a live situation I cannot say enough about how important a noise gate/supressor is. Unwanted noise - BE GONE. But be careful, because on an extreme setting (on a short decay setting) you can risk cutting your notes short.
An EQ pedal is necessary if you need to shape your tone further. If you like the tone of your guitar, why tweak it further? but if there is something special about the tone of your guitar you would like to highlight, then a 7 band EQ should be enough.
But for many tone tweakers (me included), have moved from your bog-standard 3 band to 7 band to 31 band. And the best EQ around is not a linear EQ like the ones I have just mentioned. the Parametric EQ is the ultimate in tone shaping because you can choose what frequency you want to control instead of fixed ones on you conventional linear EQ's.
The usage of an EQ is entirely up to you. if you want to change the original tone of your guitar then putit in front of your guitar in the efx chain. if you want to change to overall processed signal, then put it at the end of your efx chain. If your amplifier has an EFX loop, even better, because you can EQ your sound on demand.

Most Low gain shredders use a compression sustainer. eg malmsteen ,eric johnson..
an example will be zack from cosmic funk express's live rig
ibanez Tube screamer ( level 10 gain 0) -BOSS DS -1 (level 10 gain 4) - Compression Sustainer (half sustained)
this will create a tone that sounds like a clean tone + sustain.nice for shred
since you have a metal zone.i don't think it will be any use for a CS-3 _________________ gapnap.com
