Hi folks,
I wonder if any of you could help suggest a drum machine that I could use in a live setting with following scenario:
~realistic sound, lots of good presets and fills
~ I dont' want to program whole songs but just use the presets as a background beat, but MUST be able to trigger fills and stop/start with a footswitch.
I want to experiment doing small gigs at pubs, might be just guitar/vocal w drum machine, or guitar + bassist + machine.
err, once upon a time (here's showing my age!) such machines used to be common, but I'm seems like most machines nowadays are geared for whole-song play and not easy to use for fills and rolls in a "live" situation?
searching online, The BOSS Dr Rhythm DR-3 seems suited for what I want to do BUT it doesn't have MIDI out (^%$%@)
I'd appreciate any suggestions, Thanks |

Thanks for the links! Hey, I think I read your review in the Star itself, didn't realize it was YOU! (Do you still review records, used to buy the Star for your reviews, but I suppose nowadays nobody knows how to read anymore..)
I just checked out the zoom site, seems like there's a new model out (?availability in M'sia) RT-323 which has 48kHz sampling frequency AND MIDI IN&OUT.... those guys probably read your review too!
I will really need to be able to trigger start/stop AND fills with footswitching, and I've noted that Zoom has an interesting concept of allowing a "Next" pattern assignment to each pattern, and the footswitch moving across a few patterns.....seems like a workaround to having dedicated "Fill" buttons, but probably effective.
I'll go thru the manuals to see if it can do what I need.
May I ask your opinion on the quality of the drum sounds in Zoom as compared to Alesis and Roland/Yamaha? Not that I want people to pay too much attention to the drums, after all, I'm a guitarist hahahahaha....
Thanks for your help! |

i got a zoom rt-123...when i first bought it, played with it for a month, then got confused (coz i'm a guitarist too...all these programming makes me dizzy)...now it's collecting dust...and this one has no fills...so memang a bit leceh...
but the plus point is that for zoom - the sound is mighty fine indeed...i'm sure the newer ones are a lot better
btw - easy drums using pc? what free software is available? |

I know this is kind of a late reply as I was rather busy toward end-of the year last year.
DR-3 is the lowest range among the BOSS Drum Machines and true enough there is no MIDI out. The next in the range of BOSS Drum Machines will be DR-670 and this "babe" has a MIDI Out. Here's the specs:
1. 256 superb-quality drum and percussion sounds
2. Velocity-sensitive pads permit very expressive rhythm pattern
programming
3. Bass Part for programming bass lines using 16 different sounds
4. 200 versatile preset rhythm patterns and 200 user-programmable
patterns
5. Fretboard-style pad interface for easy programming of rhythm/bass
lines
6. Direct Pattern Play function for triggering patterns "on the fly" _________________ Music echos in Eternity! |
