Conceived by Ben Liew of the seminal Malaysian punk band, Ben’s Bitches in early 2003, Disarseter Records was established fill the vacuum in the local music industry in the area of publishing, sales and distribution of independent music.
At the end of 2004, he was joined by Rafil Elyas who was in the process of setting up a label for his band, 360° Head Rotation. Realizing they shared a common vision, they decided to combine their respective resources and formally incorporate Disarseter Records Sdn Bhd in October 2005.
Disarseter Record’s goal is to enable independent artists to create original works and develop a revenue stream that will allow them to sustain and grow their craft.
Disaster Records works with independent artists who want to maintain control over their creative processes and provides album financing, promotion and distribution. In addition to that, Disarseter Records shall showcase other independent artists in a series of compilation albums.
Panic in the Peninsula is the first in the series. The compilation title, playfully describes the onset of initial panic as the listener is taken out of his normal musical comfort zone and challenged by this eclectic mix. The album consists of fifteen artists, three Disarseter Records bands; Ben’s Bitches, 360° Head Rotation and Maharajah Commission and twelve independent artists; Frequency Cannon, Lucy in the Loo, Azmyl Yunor, Jamie Woon, Soft Touch, Broken Scar, Beat the System, Furniture, Euseng, Lied, and Auburn.
The material was selected to showcase the diversity of original Malaysian independent music. The songs were written, recorded, engineered, produced and financed by the artists themselves.
This compilation will enable these acts to gain exposure by creating a sampler that could be efficiently packaged and distributed.

Soft Touch
Soft Touch plays pop rock of a Quirky and Whimsical variety (Q & W),
folky yet punchy with Markiza and Peter Hassan Brown doing the singing
and larking about, banging the head, dancing on the keyboards etc, while
Alex Ang provides a driving, complex beat and Wong Lip Kee plies the
guitar like a latter day Hendrix. Latest addition in Alda Tan who funks
it up on bass. Highlight songs: Wishful Thinking (soulfully sung by
Markiza, a love ballad beefed up with a skar rhythm and some frantic
rock in places) and Better World (with Hassan Peter on harmonica).
Frequency Cannon
Frequency Cannon: fun, energetic and crazy-as-dancing-frogs whenever
onstage. Azrul, Dino, Yuri, Kuachee and Siva: Five members who combine their
powers to form not a giant robot, but a single entity whose one aim is to
rock the house down wherever the power of their music is called for. Assumes
an un-appointed and committed responsibility towards the music scene for
testing the structural integrity of gig stages nationwide. As of the
publishing of this compilation, working on a full-length album.
Broken Scar
Broken Scar began as a solo singer-songwriter outfit in January 2003 with Kevin Teh and his acoustic guitar. Broken Scar presently features Alda Tan on bass and Manshaan on drums, with Kevin at the helm.
Their song 'Scratch', a crowd pleaser with an infectious chorus, paints an accusive scenario interlaced with rhetorical questions, evoking emotions tied to moments spent reminiscing the turning points in relationships. This song features a striking guitar solo by Paul Chuah.
The band is in the midst of recording an album, collaborating with other local talents in a spirit of camaraderie.
Beat The System
Led by Stewart and Shuresh, BEAT THE SYSTEM dove head first into the local music scene in 2003, confident of making a big impact.
The nu-metal and rap-core influenced band consists of Sam (MC), Shuresh (vocals), Stewart (guitar), Selvam (bass), Gerald (drums).
BEAT THE SYSTEM is mainly known for their heavy yet melodic songs and high-octane live performances. Currently the band is working on its five song EP, expected to be released by end of 2005.
Az Samad
Az Samad is a full-time composer-performer who focuses on writing original acoustic guitar music. A classical guitar background laid the foundation for his unique sound, a blend of jazz, Latin, pop and new age. After completing his first degree in music he studied with Eric Roche, an influential acoustic fingerstyle guitarist from the UK.
"Acoustic Gestures", an independently produced CD featuring 12 of his original compositions for solo acoustic guitar has garnered rave reviews. He is currently studying Jazz Composition and Performance (Guitar) under scholarship at the world famous Berklee College Of Music, Boston, USA.
360º Degree Head Rotation
Emerging in early 2004, 360º Degree Head Rotation unleashed a wave of mephistophelean mayhem on an unsuspecting Malaysian music scene.
Casting a tangled net of punk, goth, blues and rock, the band trawls the depths of human psyche and hauls up a monstrous bounty served up in songs of wicked delight.
This quartet features Rafil Elyas on guitar and vocals, Jack Nathan on lead guitar and strings, Nazrul Ahmad on bass and Mohd Nuhi Adha Selamat on drums.
Known mainly for their intense and sometimes disturbing live performances, the band is currently working on their debut studio album due for release first quarter 2006.
Furniture
At every turn, furniture attempts to strike that elusive balance between bold invention and comforting familiarity in its music. Venturing into spaces described as post-rock, shoegaze and avant-pop, the band never strays far from being artful, honest, sweeping and emotional.
Two years in the making, furniture recently released its debut album Twilight Chases the Sun to unanimous critical acclaim by the press and fans alike, some proclaiming it the local independent release of the year.
Having played major regional music festivals such as KLue Urbanscapes 2004, Baybeats 2005 and Baybeats 2005, furniture is set to continue gigging in support of its album, with a planned appearance at Malaysia's seminal urban music festival, Rock The World, later this year.
Lied
Gigging since September 2004, Lied has maintained a busy schedule with intimate acoustic performances in venues such as Starbucks and La Bodega, independent music events Paul's Place and a major Tsunami benefit show at Zouk. The immense versatility in Lied's music enables the band to effortlessly traverse creative extremes.
The band consists of singer Adlin, drummer Ajuon, bassist Adam and guitarists, Matt and Sen Kiat. The group's EP, "Making Enemies", was released in mid 2005, showcasing the group's unique brand of rock with influences ranging from A Perfect Circle, My Bloody Valentine, to Joy Division.
Ben’s Bitches
The dysfunctional tale of Ben's Bitches begins in 1995 in Subang Jaya Secondary School when troublemakers Ben Liew and Chee Keong bonded and began perpetrating acts of obscene mischief. With Satesh Narayannan, they formed a punk band, Mahatir's Mohawk.
In 2003, troubadour Azmyl Yunor took over drums with his trademark “I can’t drum” technique. The sound was redefined and the band was renamed Ben’s Bitches.
Ben's Bitches released their first LP in 2004, National Disservice, a thorn in the side to Malaysia's uptight and pretentious music industry.
Labeled "the most dangerous band around", Ben's Bitches gloriously wreaks havoc with new drummer Wafiey and are currently in the studio mixing their sophomoric album "Sex, Drugs and Sambal".
Auburn
Born in 2000 as a quartet, the Subang Jaya-based group was cultivated around a common love for left-of-center alternative rock music inspired by artists like The Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle, Silverchair, Tori Amos, Pink Floyd, Under Byen, Sigur Ros and Jimmy Eat World. Reincarnated as a trio since 2003 with Alvin Seah (drums), Emer Ezwan (bass guitar) and Izuan Shah (guitar/vocals), the band released the five-track mini-LP Karya independently in 2005. |
