X2s huh? u thinking of buying? Very Happy
for starters its pretty expensive..but thats to be justified. Let me explain what an X2 is first so that u understand what your getting here...

I remember reading this a few years back when it was still on the AMD road map on chips they were producing, it was codenamed Manchester, or was it Toledo... i wonder how they come up with the names..like a few ppl paid to sit and think of names..like, "HOW ABOUT SEMPRON!?", which just has to be the dumbest name ever for a cpu chip.
Anyway, back then to have more processing power, you get more chips on a board. Intel has the Xeon chips which cope with dual processors, while amd had the Opterons which had dual or quad processors boards. (.the Opteron vs the Xeon!..i get a mental image of a jap movie with dudes in monster suits, or some title bout in WWE RAW..damn, hehe).
Now, the problem with these chips was they made things faster..BUT needed applications capable of utilizing a multiprocessor setup, plus communication between the different chips created bottlenecks, thus latency, thus slower processing.
Now some bright dude making the chips must of thought 'hey, why dont we put 2 chips into 1 ?' so all the chaps in the lab pat him on the back and so now you have the dual core chips, or in laymen terms ' 2 chips in 1!'. had all the benefits of using dual processors minus the bad stuff..its still considered a single chip, and with no real latency to speak off (actually its 99% less but who cares for the 1%).
AMD releases its X2 processor (which fits into the EXISTING 939 socket motheboard) and Intel release its Pentium D (brand new socket, so no upgrade for u prescott users Very Happy..kene beli mobo baru..hahaha).
From benchmarks ive seen, god damn theyre fast, though the bus speed for the x2 is still 2.0 ghz with a PR rating of 4800++ (refer to this forum -
http://www.i-bands.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=19616&highlight=#19616 if u need to understand speed differences between AMD and INTEL chips). Theres a new chip jsut release i think, sort of a low end X2 which runs at 3800++ with less L1 and L2 cache (512k), so u might think getting that if ur on a budget, cos i think the AMD64 X2 4800 sells at the almost same price as its rated speed. yes!*gasp*
Now ofcourse, that bright dude who thought of putting 2 chips into 1, also thought about putting 4 chips into 1...hehe..but the Quad Cores are still a way off...or is it...
