i still wanna put the song in the demo someday so i left the thing as "mono" version with everything centre....
okta, need to ask u sth...
when i do panning, i use the cakewalk virtual room simulator. it can pan from left to right and also simulate the distance from the mike. so i give every instrument a different location.
but when i test it on different radios, the mixing is always so different. on this radio the guitar drowns out everything, on that radio almost can't hear the guitar.
is it something to do with whether the radio is surround or not? like if the radio has no surround then i just interprets the "distance" by changing the volume unpredictably instead?
so, wat i do is i keep a "flat" mixdown of the file, with all the effects i want, but no panning, everything centre. then i continue from there and give each instrument different panning, and mixdown again.
then i take the "flat" version and the "panned" version, and mix them down together, but i make sure the flat version if softer than the panned one. so that underneath the distance and panning, you can still hear all the instruments in the centre...it seemed to help make the sound less unpredictable from radio to radio but is this the correct way? _________________ www.i-bands.net/audiovault/bands/2701/

i'm not sure about this cakewalk stuff ..
some room simulator.. have some phase issue...
i guess u should alwiz check ur mix on a mono setting...
mix will sound different on other system ....maybe cos the speakers ur mixing on is not flat ...doesn't represent the sound reproduction good... |

hey jakar, u come up with the most wonderful stuff but let down by bad production. I actually do look forward to hearing ur stuff because its quite unique, youre one of those few who dont stick to conventions and thats a very good thing.
you could just try dry panning, and apply reverb/delay separately rather than using a room simulator. Like Okta said, room simulators has phase problems and that really shits up your mix. For example, for the 'left guitar' , what i usually do for good wide guitars is PAN LEFT 45-60 on one side, and panright the same signal(or the second mic if ur micing) at 80-100 on the other, and so can u adjsut its stereo positioning and audio strength by messing around with both the panned signal while leaving lots of space in the centre for other instruments.
The right PAN is compressed and has about 5-25ms delay depending on the sound i want to get, while i give some slight dry reverb on the left to get the proper ambience. That way, u can zero in and troubleshoot any phase problems during mixing.
Give it a try and see if that works out for you. |

Sound quality aside ehem..
The song itself is a cool song. I look forward to this being recorded properly.
