hey Mad Souls,
it all depend what are you trying to achieve here, and of course your budget.

Sure u can but a chep karaoke mic worth RM3 and find an adapter to insert your mic in the Line-in an on board soundcard.

Or you can have a soundcard with pre-amp, phantom power...etc. and buy a condenser mic. Whatever works for you.
You don't need a whole mixer to use a microphone. Normally it is use because usually mixers have their mic pre-amp and phantom power,so if you akready have a mixer with that, you can use it.(phantom power only for condenser mics).

About the positioning, i think there's not much positioning for vocals.
I've read on Audio Technology Mag:
Placing mics at different position affects the signal, wether direct on the mouth's level, lower or higher.
Obviously putting the mic further you'll achieve more of the room sound.
Sometimes a pop filter is needed, to avoid the popping sound when using words with p,t,d...(plosive nouns).

Editing the vocal track is too subjective. Some people like giant size hall reverb, some have it dry....
There's a few types of plugins for vocals. I only know Yamaha's Vocal Rack.
Antares have a few. mic modeler,auto-tune and a vocoder plugin(can't remember the name..)

cheers, Smile

I'm not sure on that.

Perhaps you should save up a bit more and get a higher range stuff. Something with ASIO.

ermm.. aku tak terer sgt ... tapi care aku utk record vocs nih...

mic >> mixer >> pc (soundcard SB Live!) >> acid pro software

dlm acid pro tuh plak aku akan apply effects:

EQ (utk tone vocal tuh) ... suggested setting:
a. boost 120 Hz - fullness
b. boost 200-250 Hz - boom
c. boost 5 kHz - presence
d. boost 7.5-10 kHz - sibilance
e. boost 2.5-3.5 kHz - for lead vocals

compressor (utk kawal dynamic between input paling tinggi ngan rendah)
a. attack: as fast as possible
b. release: 0.5 second
c. ratio: 4:1-8:1

gate (utk cut off sound yang bawah threshold)

reverb
- biasenye aku pakai mode yang ade kat situ - concert hall 1

setting EQ kat atas tuh sume aku amik dari buku... tapi depends kat vokalis tuh punye suare jugak.. sometimes setting tuh ok..

kekdang ade jugak aku tgk yang pakai delay kat vokal... best jugak... especially kat part chorus ... huhu!! maybe aku akan eksperimen nanti...

pasal distance mic ngan mulut .. kalau vokalis tuh suara lantang (rock!!!!)aku akan suruh jauh kan mic skit .. then.. kalau suara slow aku suruh dekat .... itu jek teori aku... hehe!! pasal kalau suara kuat mic die dekat... bunyi akan jadi noisy nanti... tuh experience aku la...

Ok, i got this from Sam at the rollingeye forum and its for anyone who are willing to try anything out. I intend to do this as soon as i get my PC back. Opinions?

Quote:

try pantyhose(2 of em and wrap around a wire hanger-for baju itu-) and use any karaoke mic or mic biasa

Surprised
V + + ( 0 )
O ++++ \/
C + + | MIC
A + Panty |========>
L + hose

and record the vocals in a small room (try not to have much reverb in the room) and then once done add some reverb & chorus(minimum) to it and make the vocal stand out more then add effect use a bit of delay and not forgetting always use compressor
