MODAR -- Modar is unquestionably (at least according to us)
an essential historical slice of our local underground
rock/metal scene. While they may not have received the kind of
reverence
commonly dished out to the likes of a Langsuyr or a Cromok, or,
shifting to a non-metal
register, a Carburator Dung; Modar's place amongst the pantheon is
nothing
short of deserved and justified. If you missed out on an opportunity,
or weren't
around, to score a copy of Inferior Symphony back in the early 90s,
then all
we can say is this: you're the poorer for it. And let's face it, most
of the older local
stuff that get brandished with a "legendary" tag often are overrated
and ends
up in our "crapper bin" anyway. But this is hardly so with Inferior
Symphony.
If ever Malaysians are to start jumping on the Doooom bandwagon
currently
taking the world by a glacial storm, Inferior Symphony should be
prized as an artifact
of our local past anticipating, by a good 15 or so years, of what has
YET to come.
Come watch history reform and unfold (yet again).
MAN UNDER ZERO EFFORT -- Local prog-punk saviours who most recently
opened
for the Ruins' Tatsuya Yoshida on the Bangkok leg of the latter's S.E.
Asian tour.
Amidst all the overblown brouhaha over indie-rock or/and post-rock
making in-roads
into the local scene, MUZE stands out like a sore thumb bludgeoned to
death with a belligerent jackhammer. These guys just aren't your token
"unique" or "different" band within the scene BUT are the REAL deal
through
and through -- taking their craft to heights none of those brouhaha-ed
over
bands could even stagger towards, let alone envision themselves
there. Buzzwords: Complex, polyrhythmic,
technical (without even the slightest bit "Jamtank"-esque in meaning),
dynamic.
KLANGMUTATIONEN -- Featuring the original lineup that has yet to
perform
live together: Tham Kar Mun, Yandsen, Yeoh Yin Pin and Boon (aka Tan
Kok Hui).
All of whom should be heralded as pivotal core figures to Malaysia's
"avant and
art rock/punk" past (dating as far back as the early 90s)
if ever someone was to write that history. Music-wise, Klgmutationen
is as BRUTAL
as you can get -- mincing and brewing Takayanagi, Abe, Deathspell
Omega, and Tony Conrad
in one single tormenting guillotine drop. Haven't you head? Klangites
are fucked up.
ONANI -- What could possibly be the grindcore equivalent of
pornography?
Onani might just be that answer. Certainly not porn in the way of
hentai, bukkake,
bondage S&M or even the many hardcore antics of Nacho Vidal and Rocco
Sifriedi.
But more in the vein of a souped up contemporarized street KL-ite
vision of
Debbie Does Dallas
with cameo appearances by Rodney Dangerfield, Fat Albert and John
Waters no less.
And when there's Waters, there's Harris Glenn Milstead. Debbie Does KL
meets
Pink Flamingos. Bring panties, guys and grrls.
NUISANCE DRILLED -- Promising young upstarts with a partiality for the
mud, sludge, dirt
and grime decked and RAWKed out in glorious low-end form that speaks to
our
crust up bunghole hairs unwashed after purging 6 rounds of menacing
Indian curry.
What more do you want to hear? Just don't be a pussy and miss out.
SEE YOU THERE !
