Biography Of Halun (Updated 2005)
author: halun posted: 12 Apr 2005 04:01 PM
The idea of forming HALUN came about during the middle of 1996 when a certain, unknown Punk Rock Guitarist named Saiful Nizam@Nizam Earth, right after the destruction of his former Punk Rock band G.I.G. (Graphite Igneous Guitar), had decided to return to his metallic roots, intending to form a Thrash Metal band with high speed tempos, intense, deadly yet melodic riffs reminiscence of MEGADETH and SLAYER and the in-your-face attitude and lyrics of regular Punk Rock bands. “I’m more into offending as many people as I can if they deserve it-even myself!” he said.
For the next few years he was quite unsuccessful in his search for suitable band members, that was until late ‘99 when he met a talented drummer from an obscure black metal band by the name of Salleh. And from then till February 2000, the band’s line-up was, Saiful-Guitar, Daniel-Guitar, Salleh-Drums and Aizel-Bass, and our concept at that time was an experimental one called Chaos Metal, a kind of loud and fast music that has its roots in various kinds of music, and also the naming of the band as HALUN!
At the end of 2000, Daniel had an argument with Saiful and got kicked out, followed shortly thereafter by the disappearance of their drummer and co-founder from the face of this planet! Luckily Aizel and Saiful found Salleh’s replacement in the form of Malee of the local Black Metal Band AL-QIARNART and were even luckier when they later found a highly matched 2nd Lead Guitarist among the deadpan jerk offs, a fan of MEGADETH by the name of Fauzi!
July 2001, Fauzi got enrolled in a Teacher’s College to become a music teacher and Malee suggested they take his band’s Bass player Faiz as their Rhythm Guitarist a month later, and that they did!
And with this line-up, they recorded their first demo tape ‘13th MAY 1969’ on the month of April 2002-“a very, very unsatisfying session” for that demo was done on a very low budget and they haven’t found a suitable vocalist yet.
The band’s first gig was Live from Extermination 2nd Blast in Nilai Negeri Sembilan on Sunday October 6th headlined by the Brutal Death Metal band BREAK THE SILENCE, a gig which happened just days after Salleh returned from out of nowhere and Faiz temporarily opted out.
So on that lousy Sunday of October 6th, the band entered the pub for their first performance and played three out of their five songs from the first demo to the expectant crowd of mostly grungesters and hardcore-ists, with Saiful on the guitar and vocals of the first two and Aizel as vocalist of the final song.
After the gig they met and signed the band’s 1st Vocalist, Togom, and with that they practised intensively for their second gig (Riang Ria Raya Gig) at Tangkak, Johor on December ninth…
And that’s when the darkest of days came to the band!
For on that day, their vocalist failed to turn up, Saiful once again took the mike and the two founding members later had an argument backstage, an ugly one in which both side had said things they would surely regret later on!
After two gloomy months in between our second and third gig, the band had found their second and most talented vocalist in the band’s history; a fated meeting preceded by a string of correspondence between Saiful and one unknown fan from Pagoh, who told him he used to be a vocalist of a now defunct Thrash Metal band from his hometown. Thus, from that day on, all of HALUN’s throat-grinding jobs were given to Radzi, ex-vocalist of BENTARA! Our line up at that time was Radzi-Vocalist, Saiful-Guitar, Faiz-Guitar, Aizel-Bass and Malee-Drums.
Yes, and thus HALUN performed for the third time (For Your Ears Only-The Final Doom Volume 1) a gig held at JB’s Scoot Trap Bistro pub organised by Grundar Production on the blessed Sunday of 2nd of March 2003, followed a week later by our fourth gig (The Eastern Loudness) at the same place as our first one (The Old House Pub, Nilai) but was organised this time by the Nilai Loudblast Scene Production; a gig headlined by the mighty SIL-KHANNAZ!
The rest of 2003 was spent on a morbid note, with Aizel leaving home after a fight with his family, Malee was drafted into the Army, Faiz got involved in a motor accident and went into coma for days, Saiful went to pursue his dreams in the Capitol and Radzi went back to Pagoh to tend to his family’s F n’ B business. HALUN was reduced to a two-piece band during this second half of the year, with Saiful on Guitar and Radzi on vocals yet they strived to keep it alive until the end of the year, for that was when Radzi decided to leave HALUN indefinitely for his ever-demanding business leaving Saiful to find new bandmembers.
Fortunately, he succeeded in filling up the void quite fast, with the January 2004 line-up of the band comprises of Razman-Guitar, Saiful-Guitar, Radzi’s former bandmember (also named) Radzi-Bass, Baem-Keyboards, Mus-Drums and Ewan-Vocals.
Fast forward into the middle of 2004 saw the band performing their fifth gig (The Eternal Tranquility Part 1) at The Little Havana Club in the middle of May, with the January line-up at that time. After that there had been some more line-up changes in the band. Baem quit to pursue his studies and later joined another band, Ewan and Radzi left because of their jobs, and later these three former bandmembers reunited to form yet another band that played more Black metal than Halun’s Death metal inclinations.
But all was well again in August that same year, when Saiful got an unexpected reply for an ad he put in a local magazine (for the female vocalist position) earlier on, an event which ultimately led to the arrival of their female singer, Julie alias Celestial Eve into the band. And even luckier were they when Saiful bumped into another one of Halun’s fans when he went shopping for underground Cds, who goes by the name of Bob. He said he admired the band so much that he wanted to join Halun as a guitarist, but Saiful said there was only room for a bass player, and he agreed to it.
And thus, with the arrival of Bob alias Blood Daemon into the band, Halun began rehearsing for their second demo with much more enthusiasm; a fact that materialised when they entered Black Area Chamber Recording Studio on September 11th 2004 to record their second demo, ‘IN MEMORIAM’ and finished it a month later. The recording line-up was Saiful @ Void Tenebrous on vocals and guitar, Julie @ Celestial Eve on female vocals, Razman @ Vile Zephyrus on guitar, Bob @ Blood Daemon on bass and Mus @ Black Gryphus on drums.
A week later Razman @ Vile Zephyrus left the band because of some personal problems but the band continued on with their sixth gig The Shadows of Darkness at Criiz Club (formerly known as Donington) on December 18th, organised by Diamond Studio Entertainment. Come February 2005, the band have completed their line-up with the addition of Farukh @ Dark Gladius on 2nd Guitar and Fadzreel @ Shadow Breath on Flute and Percussion, the former was Bob’s old friend whom he had convinced to join the band prior to Razman’s departure, and the latter was a flautist of The Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s orchestra troupe, whom Saiful had read his ad in a studio early that year and successfully talked him into joining HALUN to create a new breed of Death/Black metal music, considering Fadzreel’s Fusion Jazz inclination and Saiful’s ‘Anything Goes’ musical mindset.
The band are currently selling their demos in the underground scene, label hunting to secure their musical future, looking for new gigs to join and play in and preparing new songs for their upcoming, still unnamed (at the time of writing) debut album, due December 2005.

THE END
