NightShift .: Click To Enter :. History It was in the small town of Ipoh where twin guitarist Daryl "Astro" Sen and Thomas "Tomisimo" Toh, who could be considered as the founding members, started the band. Playing together for more than 12 years, the duo has had several other band members before setting up their latest version on Nightshift, earlier this year. Not much can be said about the band that has only appeared public twice. It might not be a great number but very major bands in the world went through such a period. 2002 seemed to be the band's best time as it reached a right mix of musicians with the same interest. Aside from Daryl and Thomas, the band was honored by the precision of drummer Chris "Loba" Das, the vocal chords of Dinesh "Doofus" Ratti while current singer, Ghaz Ramli was on bass. The unnamed band played a number of covers including Metallica's Seek and Destroy, Master of Puppets, Enter Sandman and For Whom the Bells Tolls, Slayers's Mr. Freeze and Raining Blood, Def Tones's My Own Summer and Rage Against the Machine's Bombtrack. This period is also considered as the real birth of the group as the chemistry was phenomenal. But "denial is not just a river in Eygpt", everyone knew in Malaysia being in a band will not make you rich. Dinesh left for Dublin to study medicine, Chris and Ghaz left for Kuala Lumpur for the tertiary education while Daryl got a job while Thomas furthered his studies. Chinese New Year 2003 is when the band decided to pull the "guys" back together. April 2004, the band consisting of Daryl and Thomas on guitars, Chris and drums and Ghaz on bass played their first session after a year's absence at Kabuki Studios in Hartamas. Daryl's childhood friend Daniel Tsen was later invited to join the band, sharing the vocals and bass with Ghaz.Almost a year later, Chris pulled out of the band due to other commitments which brought Cassian into the picture. Cassian, who was Daryl and Thomas's first drummer, was instantly welcomed by the band which was at that time led by Ghaz in vocals and Daniel on bass. It took the band almost a year to get their first gig, thanks to Rafique of Village Roof. On March 29 2005, Nightshift was invited as the opening act for the Rock News Gig at the Dicso in central Kuala Lumpur. The gig also had the honor of staging other bands such as Kuching-based Indka, Raffique's Zeil, and the Republic of Brickfields led by Koffin Kanser's front man Aru. Nightshift played their first single "Slide" along with For Whom the Bell Tolls and Mr Freeze which received an honest response. The band then went through another period of maturing as most were very much involved in the respective careers. Cassian sealed a place as an air-steward for an airline which caused the band drummer-less most of the time, Ghaz was given more responsibility at work, Daryl accepted a promotion and Thomas was jobless after graduating. But the band still took every minute of studio precious whenever they could get Cassian in the country. ~ Write-up by Ghaz Ramli |
