Newbie here and just meddling with recording...

I really want to record guitar track that sounded heavy as hell like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AeSZIhhytqI

or this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN63pUwnPVQ

Google punya google, this is what I gathered...

1. achievable through layering and panning of several guitar tracks. The more layering, the heavier you'll get; and
2. don't push the gain too much as it will cause unwanted noise.

I tried layering the guitar track (2 tracks). 1 hard left and 1 hard right. Gain setting pukul 10-11. Problem now is that the tracks acted as if they are cancelling each other. So bunyi macam hampeh la pulak.

Btw, I'm using POD XT Live that serves as inteface and Cubase 5.

Your feedbacks, advices and comments are very much appreciated. Jawab dalam Bahasa Malaysia pun takpe.

Se Se Nieh.

P/S - Can I create drum tracks like the first youtube link (Travis Montgomery) using Addictive Drums alone without any additional hardware.

aku ada tgk video from Jerry Lewis...

die tunjuk die record 4 layer for each guitar..
means... 4 pan L & 4 pan R...
lepas tu another 4 untuk add harmonics...
sound sgt tebal n tight...

kalau ko layer n satu hard right & hard left...
mcm stereo je.. tak tebal pun.. cuma kembang je...

layered a guitar track at some point doesnt really make it heavy in certain case which it just make the sound getting louder.

huzai may have pull out the most important point there.

eternal as well..layering the guitar track is one of the technics.

or else you want to apply some delay, or compress just few track out of 4 tracked.

EQing probably might help as well.. input factor is the biggest factor of all..

or else there is one technics i found in some metal forum they use haas technics.. i cant recall which web it is..but i still remember the plugins vesco haas or something like that, if u found the tutorial might help as well..

Memang cadang nak buat quad tracking - meaning, you record the same riff 4 separate times, layer them over one another and pan them appropriately. Tapi baru je buat 2 track, track-track tu seolah-olah cancelling each other. I think it was due to sound/frequency range or something...

The reason I'm layering the guitar track is to thickens the sound up and gives the guitar this "huge" quality to it that can just be brutal.

Would appreciate it loads if you could direct me to the Haas technics.

i didnt find the metal forum after a long run, but i might found one that quite helpful.. it came with step by step explaination and sound clip.. hope this could help you

http://www.benvesco.com/blog/mixing/2009/mix-recipes-heavy-guitar-haas-and-eq/

in manually say haas technics is considered as in mixing technics of couple layered guitar track and adapt of delay on it, EQ the dominated freq that you found out for thicken it up for boost. later apply reverb for heavier effect.

as well if its me, i will apply a bus comp chain on the guitar track seperately for each hard panning. use your options to create dynamic flow. if you can make parts of the track sound *tiny, tiny* then when the wave hits it'll sound even bigger

if you want to double track, use a different guitar/amp/EQ setup for the second layer... it's less fatiguing on the ears and usually sounds "bigger" and "wider".

I would like to add that as you layer alot of guitar tracks, distortion will buildup into a fuzzy mess that can actually make the sum sound whimpier and whimpier as you add tracks. Basic rule is: the more tracks you intend to layer, the cleaner they need to be. Roll off some gain on the amp. When you layer, it will come back and then you will have huge guitars with the right amount of distortion.

Personally, I think two guitar tracks playing the same part is quite enough for most needs, yet there always comes a situation that calls for some extravaganza.

the panning suggestion is a good one too, though i personally would experiment with placements other than hard left/right

EQ is your friend. Panning is necessary, but giving each guitar it's own dominant frequency range will allow for all of the guitars to live harmoniously in the song.

this is just my 2 cent or maybe dont make any sense, in recording i love more to do tricks than just record it plain and get a good result, both way should be no problem. Smile but if i have a stand by way to deal with it, it giv me much more option on how to finish it Smile

xnoybis, macam mana ko rekod 4 track tu?

sepatutnya 4 kali main.. kalau issue phase cancellation ni sebab pakai track yang sama. also kalau metal, ko takyah letak any delay/reverb to guitars, just dry, confirm sound, less eq.
hi pass and low pass will do.

+1 dgn apa yang huzai katakan.. i usually low pass and high pass almost all the time.. maybe dalam 100hz high pass, and 7khz untuk low pass and giving it lower steep Q ..

apply room reverb skit, supaya sound dia natural instead of bunyi dia macam liveless ..

lain cara ialah.. pemilihan gtr effect, pemilihan amp, less gain, intonasi gitar pun boik..dan juga gitar.. and the key is " Player Mestilah Main Dengan padat "
itupun dah memadai.. selamat mencoba.. Very Happy

hi pass and low pass will do.

Untuk case ni, main riff yang sama dua kali. Memang takde apa-apa modulation atau reverb. Gain was set at 10-11 o'clock (about 4 or 5).

Hi/low pass tak pernah try lagi. Will google it up.
