TOUTED to be the world's biggest live music competition in terms of global participation, monetary prizes, artistic gratification and worldwide exposure, The Global Battle Of The Bands (GBOB) has been the one true coveted award any aspiring musical group could hope for.

GBOB, the only contest for bands to play their own material, aims to seek and bring out the best raw talent in the world to a global audience.

Malaysia has been chosen to host the world event and it will serve as a precedent to other countries hosting future world finals thereafter, making GBOB an 'Olympics' or 'World Cup' for music of sorts.

Next year, Kuala Lumpur will be the hottest spot when GBOB 2010 welcomes world finalists from at least 17 countries, as well as music enthusiasts, local and foreign music journalists, international line-up of judges, industry professionals and together with domestic and foreign tourists from all countries represented in GBOB from Asia, Africa, America, Australasia and Europe.

GBOB, believed to be a breeding ground for Malaysia's homegrown emerging musical talents, will be judged and noticed by the most respected figures in the international music business.

"GBOB Malaysia has been an ardent and active player in GBOB since 2007, and we are honoured to have been appointed host country of this prestigious musical extravaganza which will be held outside of London for the very first time. The GBOB 2010 World Finals will be an opportune occasion for Malaysian musicians to rise to international heights and mark their emergence in the global music arena," said GBOB Malaysia national director, Issa Rodriguez.

The search for the winning Malaysian band to represent the country at the GBOB World Finals 2010 will serve as a prelude to build up excitement for the international event. This year's challenge will have a series of qualifying heats in various live music club venues in Johor Bahru, Penang and around Klang Valley.

This will culminate in a National Final where the National Champion will be awarded RM50,000 in cash and prizes and the right to be the official Malaysian representative to the GBOB World Finals 2010 with Malaysia as host country.

The Qualifying Heat stages will be held as follows:

■ Jan 7, 2011 - Qualifying Heat 1 (Jazz & Blues Discovery, Johor Bahru)
■ Jan 15, 2011 - Qualifying Heat 2 (Soundmaker, Weld Quay, Penang)
■ Jan 22, 2011 - Qualifying Heat 3 (Bangkok Connexion, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur)
■ Jan 29, 2011 - Qualifying Heat 4 (The Celebrities Hall of Music, Solaris Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur)
■ Feb 12, 2011 - National Finals (Dragonfly, Jalan Kia Peng, Kuala Lumpur)
■ Feb 26, 2011 - World Finals (KL Live, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur)

Organisers are expecting at least 80 of the country's best bands to perform at the qualifying heats where live audience votes count for 50 per cent of the results while a jury of three to five judges made up of respected musicians and music industry professionals will count for the other 50 per cent .

Four bands per qualifying heat will go on to the National Finals - two of these will be selected by the judges and the live audiences at the end of each qualifying heat, the other two will be selected by TV and online audiences via a web voting system and by watching the bands' performances online on www.facebook.com/astrohitz.

GBOB will be broadcast on Astro Hitz (Astro 705) starting Jan 7, 2011 with fresh episodes every Friday at 9pm. Bands that advance to the National Finals via the web will be announced on Astro Hitz.

"Our preliminary research shows that there are many Malaysian bands performing at underground clubs and are just waiting for a chance to be discovered. GBOB is the perfect vehicle to give these unsigned bands a chance to make their mark," Rodriguez concluded.
