Either I'm suffering brain damage, or you just kicked my
Jiminy Cricket that was good. I had to listen to the first 0:39 over and over again to get the time signatures down. The shifting times, coupled with the shifting accents makes the beginning of this song a mathematical nightmare... in a very good kind of way. Sometimes it feels like 7/8, other times it feels like 15/16. Hats off to this band for making my head spin.
The performance of this song is very tight. The consistent guitar and bass work over the shifting drum accents may have confused lesser mortals but this group pulls it off flawlessly. I have no complaints about the performance of this song.
The song itself, though intricate and attention grabbing for the first 0:42 gets rather repetitive for a while. It's not that the 4/4 riffs are bad, it's just that they get a little old being repeated over and over without any melody to flow over them.
Even changing the riff at 1:23 is only a momentary distraction. A melody, be it a guitar solo, keys solo, or vocalist would really help keep the average listener enthralled. Switching back the the crazy time signatures at 2:01 is a nice change, though I still maintain that a lead of some kind would really put this tune over the top.
The production is pretty good. The doubled guitars (extremely high gain and just plain crunchy) add depth to the high end of this song without losing clarity to overwhelming fuzz. I think the guitars could be brought forward in the mix a bit.
The bass could use some gating and compression. The bass tends to ring a bit, which muddies the sound. A gate with a rather fast close time, and some compression to add some punchiness to the tone.
The drums sound fake. The cymbals don't vary at all in decay time or tone. The drums are very well programmed and tempo mapped, but could use the touch of a real human being to really bring this tune to life.
All in all this tune has me looking forward to seeing the rest of what this group has to offer. Good work.
