I interviewed him in the early '90s when he was in KL promoting Yamaha's Pacifica series of Strat-influenced electrics.
This tall, shy, shaggy-haired young man (he was 23 at the time) had just released his amazing self-titled debut on Roadrunner Records that had the entire shred-guitar community all abuzz.
He played a couple of tunes from his album to a minus-one CD in front of an expectant audience of local shredders at Yamaha Music's old showroom near Wilayah Complex. Needless to say, they were all totally blown away by his otherworldly technique.
At one point during the demo, the CD skipped in the middle of a song, and while he seemed a tad annoyed, Firkins made a funny remark, calmly walked over to the player, hit the replay button, and played the tune from start again. And he sounded more awesome the second time!
Although he has released more than a dozen albums to date, IMHO his dazzling debut remains his most enduring work. Another classic case of a musician using up all his best ideas on his debut album?
Although it's basically a technical showcase, Firkins displays a great deal of musicality on it. And his vibrato mastery and pristine phraseology on most of the tunes are truly stuff to marvel at!
It's one of the few shred-guitar albums I can listen to in full these days.
