i mostly agree with the top 10 as it got all my favourite shredders in there..... especially racer-x where paul gilbert was a young dude who astonished the world with his fast and accurate alternate picking style.
and yes....during the 80s i agree even though there are some shredders who are faster than yngwie...but in terms of album...his rising force may be regarded as the king of the 80s

I used to like Malmsteen very much (now no more), but since he invented the genre, i agree with his number 1 ranking. living guitar God!

cacophony deserve to be in the top 10...but yngwie deserve to be the king of the 80s neo classical era. he started the whole thing and i guess he deserves it.
as for paganini....he deserves to be the pioneer of shred music.
chris impelliteri? dont think he deserves to be in the top ten coz his albums does not really stand out amongst the top ten in my opinion but yeah he sure does really shred. |

Well...I guess everyone will have their own variation of the 10 ten list...me included, but I have to say I wouldn't disagree with that list! At least 7/10 albums there were my staple listening diet in my student days!  |

| ygnie malsteen... my favorite song of his is.. the accostic solo.. i tried to learn it.. eventually i gave up after master the intro.......my fingers got ripped up.... waitting for next time .. hehe |

Yeah...Yngwie has to be one of the people who kick started the shred brigade. Just look at how many people are trying to copy him in Malaysia alone! The only thing I dont like about him is that I feel that sometimes he tends to repeat himself too much. But one thing about him that makes him stand out is that this guy shreds with feel and emotion...unlike some of the shredders who came later....they may be faster and more technical...but some of these guys can't even write a decent song let alone make the guitar speak/cry/scream...it's just a barrage of notes in a technical showcase. I feel that some of these 'emotionless shredders', who became too many in the early 90's, did make some listeners got sick of the 'technique for the sake of technique music' and in the end spawned a whole new era of alternative rock music which is like a backlash against 'shred-rock'... concentrating more on other aspects of the song as opposed to technique. Some of these bands are even 'anti-technique'... |

well..i disagree..you need technique to go with it
the vibratos ,bends , pulls ..is a way to project how you feel.
tapping,sweep picking can describe to people you are feeling empty and you want to be filled with notes
pinch harmonics tells people how you want to scream..
oh wait ..what does string skipping usually tells?
i agree with you on the "rely on technique too much" ..i am having that problem now

Yes i agree bro.. but i have inadequate technique problem. So i always feel that i didnt express my emotion totally. Kadang2 rasa nak hempas guitar pun ada..!! geram ..

i've listened to your tunes. I think with this awesome playing technique, u can replace shawn lane la.. hehehhe.. OMG my ear is bleeding!
