bukan nak ckp atau mengutuk tapi kekadang ignoring the fact which guitarist is better and not relevant is not mature thinking in my opinion. if i am a conductor of music i would want to employ a good guitarist...would you want to employ Izo xpdc rather than Hillary Ang?
if you got the chance to play or learn with either world class guitarist or with gitaris yg just a bit better than you ..which one you prefer?
yeah you wrote sumer org boleh dpt teknikal but each individual has its limit. how many ppl can achieve technical ability with the likes of rusty cooley, shawn lane? dont underestimate technicality.
both technicality and feel is not an easy task. although feel can make one guitarist special but technicality could also make one guitarist special. so if you got both then you got the edge.
i've encountered many young guitarist or veteran guitarist who says that technicality is not important. whats important is feel. i agree to a certain point. of course feel is very very important but saying that technicality is not essential is a naive statement.
feel and creativity is important. but if your technicality is limited but your ideas and creativity is beyond your level of technicality is also no use. you cannot execute them with your limited technicality. therefore players with high level of technicality has the advantage over you because they can execute more of their ideas and creativity.

I agree!
Both technique and feel is essential.
But if you say I have to choose between a guitarist who has only feel or only technique....I would listen to the one with only feel instead.
But of course...the guitarists who have both are certainly my top favourites...  |

agree! even Gary Hoey and Andy Timmons puji sham's guitar playing masa diorang jamm together during their guitar clinic kat m'sia. Aku pun suka cara sham berfikir. Profesional!
Pada aku cara berfikir ni also determines the direction of our creativity. Sometimes you have a lot of ideas but to arrange the ideas and how to deliver them depends on the way of how we are thinking (maturity). Idea is only a source, but planning to arrange and deliver the ideas effectively, we need maturity as one of the primary conditions. Maturity requires exposure and then become experience. So no wonder la kalau kdg2 guitarist sessionist lebih baik dari senior band guitarist.

You're right about the control thing gapster. You gotta have control over the technique, the sound, the feel, the relevance of your playing with regards to what's been requested. And you gotta deliver stuff quick on demand...say if they want and Yngwie-ish lick with Joe Satriani's sound but with the Clapton vibe over a fusion track etc. etc.
Yep...I do agree on the thing about 90% of sessions require the guitar guy to just play what's been given. But as I've pm'ed to you earlier about the session thingies, I happen to be called mostly for sessions where the producer wants me to create my own solos, and sometimes different versions/styles of it for the song. They do suggest some things as well, which can be impossible at times, but somehow, you gotta nail it if you want them to call you back for more sessions. So for these kinda sessions, the ability to interpret your client's demands and sometimes even introduce new ideas on the guitar parts are essential.
On the other hand other types of sessions may only require you to play whatever is notated, without asking your input or creativity, and for these, the sessionist has got to be hot in sight reading.
Yes gapster...I still havent answered your question about how the session thingy comes about...I will get back into that later in jamtank
I do agree that in general, a sessionist should be more musically accomplished than a guitarist in a band. But sadly, not always all sessionists are good players I'm afraid...and I'm speaking about both local and international ones. I'm sure there are times when you hear the guitar parts in a song and go..."uuurgghh...I can't believe somebody actually got paid for laying down that crap!!!"
All in all...Jaaroquai, PaulGilbert, Izuan and gapster have all illustrated very valid and interesting arguments in this thread and I do agree with 95% of what's been written here |

all the post have been interesting and it has deviated somehow to different directions
at the end of the day like Bode says he only agrees with 95% of whats been discussed and i would say i agree with 90%

A coupla years ago, I got to listen to Jason Becker's demo tapes when he was auditioning for David Lee Roth...playing DLR and Van Halen covers....my God...on top of his technical prowess, his 'feel' factor did improve exponentially!!! Just when you thought that Jason was great, the great just got greater! He also started playing blues at that time...and he sounded as if he had been playing blues since the last 30 years or so...too bad his health stopped him from further re-defining new standards for guitar heros.
...and I feel that Guthrie Govan is one of the guys who will definitely take that place... |
