For the players & masses, *salute*. That's hell of a great cyber-jam song/project. Will expect more, of same or higher quality (and PLEASE... >16bars solos minimum EACH next time)... and only one downside... why did you guys fall into the cliche "fade the song when the dude's shredding like hell at the end" ?!!?
Scalple & stuff, let us begin.
Bode, of the cuff... your guitar sound is crap.
Granted, mp3/WAVs flying around compromised (should it?) certain quality hertz (especially your trademark around 800kHz-1.2MHz). But hey man, that's FUZZTONE galore! where's the brown sound... earthshaker bottom, low-mids?? Personally, I strongly feel one shouldnt compromise THE sound, at all. More so, a guitar icon who has achieved a certain trademark sound & style. (Unless this is THE new Bode-sound, i dont know?) Yeah, sessions would require you sounding&playing like this & that as prescribed by the producers. but THIS, is your spotlight dude. You nailed the style, not the sound. No apologies.
Dissecting the solo. (Your solo shot off when the counter hits approx 3.16mins. 316! coincidence? flying eddies looking at you dude;)
Overall 16bars, eloquently executed and composed, trademark Bode allover.
Wailing vibratos to start-off with (1-4th bar), melodic pentatonic prelude (5-8th bar) & colorful splashes of harmonics, followed by the fiery alternate pickings (9-12th), and finally a scary climax mix of string skipping tapping appregios (13-16th). Brilliant job.
The buts.... :
Could be the exaggerated hi-s & hi-mids, but the second half of the solo, especially the alternate picking phase lacked notes clarity. Sounds like rushing through an ascending & descending exercise. Obviously fast, but some clarity would definitely give an even scarier impression of speed. No, not expecting Kee Marcello ping pong balls oozing out of the solo, but in comparison, the tapping notes tone managed to scream through the speakers.
Vibrato at the end of the alternates somehow sounded 'half breathed' and didn't gel well with the phrasing (yeah, what a fuzzy statement).
The thumbs up....:
The solo has character (a story to tell/kill).
String skipping seemed 2nd to nature, and the typical chaotic pattern of notes in the mayhem of appregios definitely will killof potential solo-transcribers. |

yeah....c'mon guys....dont expect praises everytime
he is not being rude....apsal tak leh ker nak bagi comment yg membina....Bode has given alot of reviews and why not give him some reviews as well?
I would think that Bode himself would not mind what aB has stated because he is an open minded guy....and hell who knows aB is a world class guitarist himself and you would want some reviews from him too....i would coz i know my sound is crap!

im sure bode wouldnt mind the comments, though i do detect some slight malicious intent in them(or maybe its his choice of words)...but he backs it up with some good appraisals of Bodes playing style. Relax guys, it isnt blatant slander rather a critical appraisal with good attention to detail.
Besides...ITS BODE WE're TALKING ABOUT!!! I already have more than enough respect for him , both as a musician and a person so i will not think less of him anyhow. We are after all human. But i am curious as to how aB would actually do...
But frankly speaking, youre not the first to get flamed (or ignored) after telling ppl what they dont want to hear here.  A few of us decided not to review songs because of that...tempers can sure fly when we're dealing with musicians. |

thats perfectly fine freqzz  ... the artistic side of the mind tends to side very heavily with the emotional side too. But we're all aspiring musicians here, therefore making the need for critism even more apparent. Agreed though, a proper choice of words must be used. Words such as 'crap, usless,bloody awful' should atleast be avoided. People shouldnt need to humiliate to prove a point. It jsut degrades their argument.
But then again, sometimes even polite and well intentioned criticsm gets you screwed over. Hmmm...im suddenly reminded of the topic a few years back in dalnets #guitar "THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GUITARIST WITHOUT AN EGO". lol. No idea where that thought came from . |
