eh bukanlah, bukan thread untuk gitaris hebat saja. the topic is quite general and applies to anyone who writes songs or even attempted to write songs. _________________ "life is what you make it"

_________________ [ Kluk Kluk Adventure ] | [ Call the Paramedics ] | [ Dot ] | [ AJEEPEK ] |

Wut ever Melody that runs in ur head.. write it down right away.. dont wait.. coz u might forget it..
Wut ever things u think as an inspiration.. come up with sumthing.. sumthing that made u feel inspired..
Express ur anger, happiness.. wutsoever... thats the best.. for me..
Im not that good... but.. thats wut i learned...
and true.. not listening to any music for a couple of weeks really helps u to come up with some sick ideas.. _________________ realising life is worth living, accepting acceptance..

Just wondering whether anyone of you ever write lyric first before writing the melody.
I used to write the so-called "lyrics" without melody when I was a teenager - that was almost 20 over years ago. I couldn't call that poem or anything because they're mere rubbish when I found those things that I wrote 20+ years later. Some were written out of anger. Some were written out of happiness. Some were written for no reason at all. All of them ended up in the rubbish bin. Even melody came to my brain I could not write anything down because I didn't know (I still don't know) a damn thing about music note. |

i tried those rules about what comes first, music or lyrics. After a while i just went SCREW IT. It doesnt matter really. Soemtimes i want to have something to say and add a melody to it, or sometimes i have a melody and want something to say with it...it depends on how things flow together. Putting rules on how u make your music in truth just makes things harder for you. Better yet to let it happen as is...dont be too hung up about THE RIGHT WAY and THE WRONG WAY of making a song.
What i have noticed is that i have certain tendencies towards composing a song...and since i was a bassist/drummer long before i touched the guitar, but dabbled with the piano long before that, and the fact that i write poetry(i know that sounds gay)........my music alternates between; tight driving ryhtming lines, resonating melodies-mostly in major, or bloody depressing lyrics. It usually starts with one of the above factors and the other stuff gets steadily built around it. |

Interesting thread here!
For me, songs come out in many ways. Finding the seed of it, an idea, lick, rhythm, chord or something is the easy bit. The hard bit is the follow through in making the whole song come together and make sense. Some songs take days, and other just lie around for years.
I think coming out with a melody works best for me, as then I can dress it up with either a bassline first and then chords. |

Popular music is an art-form that thrives on thievery — everybody steals from everybody (Led Zep, for instance, were notorious for ripping off Delta bluesmen)!
The trick to writing a good song is to expand on a favourite phrase, riff or chord progression which you then use as the foundation to build something that sounds like you've created it.
The ripping off part is easy; personalising what you've stolen, which usually involves fooling around with and adding to the structure (deciding on the tempo, rhythmic arrangement, bassline, bridge etc), is a lot tougher.
As for lyrics, look for phrases and rhymes that go smoothly with the melody. Never mind if it all sounds like nonsense at first. Once you've got the basic lyrics down, you'll find a way to make sense of it all.
The moral of this story? Don't be afraid to steal, but do it creatively! |

I find that it helps to learn from a song you like and try to alter the phrase into something that is unrecognisable but still maintains the original emotion envoked by the original idea.
Sometimes it's just a few notes and sometimes one chord change is what makes the emotional impact in the music.
So yes! Steal from the best, and make it your own! =p |
