If you want the bright, high-projection Taylor sound but don't want to pay the sinfully inflated Taylor price, you should check out Yamaha's FG-433S.

It's one of the best solid-top dreadnoughts you can buy for just over RM1,000.

Although it's out of production now, you can still find it in some shops in the Klang Valley.

I've had mine for about two years. It's the axe I favour for aggressive strumming; it has a pretty nifty though somewhat unsubtle tone as this test recording with a pair of Shure KSM27s (one at the bridge and the other on the neck) should demonstrate:

It's just a Metheny-ish chord progression I had been fooling around with for many years. The miking-experiment recording was done more than two years ago and I mixed it rather flat and dry to showcase the FG-433S's natural tone-projection qualities.

The other tracks here are also acoustic guitar-miking experiments:

Rick Santana is the nickname of an old buddy I used to jam with on acoustic guitar when I was a teenager (a long, long time ago!). He was technically miles ahead of me (isn't everyone?), and was so full of brilliant ideas that I couldn't help stealing from him!

Unfortunately, he kinda lost his way on the great ocean of life. I haven't heard from him in more than two decades.

As for the kind of acoustic guitar stuff I'm into these days, I love what this guy called Steffen Basho Junghans does.

Here's a sample of his work: http://mp301.epitonic.com/streamed/files/reg/songs/mp3/Steffen_Basho_Junghans-First_Movement_(Excerpt).mp3

A tune cooked up to find out what my Washburn mandolin would sound like through Behringer's B-1 condenser:

Floating Mandolin

Wave resonator with slide on the left & Takamine on the right.

The delay-drenched mandolin sounds out-of-tunish because the strings are more than 10 years old!

Now that I've got you interested in acoustic guitar recording, please check out these early mixes of two songs I did three years ago by a KL-based singer-songwriter-guitarist called Meor. The tunes are from his album 'Itu Padang Aku Di Situ' which I recorded, mixed & produced... gratis, of course:

Itu Padang Aku Di Situ - Meor

Taylor Guitars' 2005 Fall Limiteds feature a colorful foursome of favored tonewoods from around the globe: koa from the tropical Hawaiian Islands, handsome rosewood from India, mahogany from deep within Central America, and remarkably figured cocobolo, from the rainforests of Mexico. Taylor Grand Auditorium and Dreadnought models (and one Grand Concert) were chosen for wood upgrades in 2005.

The 310ce-L10 and 314ce-L10 are stepping out, with back and sides of Hawaiian koa and Sitka spruce tops; the 320ce-L10 and 324ce-L10 take things one step further for the koa-lover, with upgraded tops of solid koa, while the 410ce-L10 and 414ce-L10 feature Indian rosewood and Sitka spruce. Both the 300 and 400 Series Fall Limiteds retain the satin finish.

The 512ce-L10 and 514ce-L10 will give fans of Tropical American mahogany more to love, with glossy mahogany tops to match their backs and sides; the 500 Series Fall Limiteds sport soundhole rosettes of colorful abalone and binding of faux-tortoiseshell.

No one can accuse the much-loved Taylor 810 of needing an "extreme makeover", and in fact, Bob Taylor still considers the stately 810 the "flagship" Taylor model. Still, the stunning looks of the 810ce-L10 and 814ce-L10 are going to turn some heads. These 2005 Fall Limiteds have back and sides of dense-grained reddish-orange Mexican cocobolo and a tight-grained Sitka top. Flamed maple binding and 800 Series pearl fretboard markers complete the package.

The 2005 Fall Limiteds are fitted out with Taylor's Expression System pickup, which captures the tonal characteristics of the chosen woods and the acoustic properties of either body shape. The 2005 Fall Limiteds will ship in September 2005.
