Malaysia has high hopes for moon

By Jonathan Kent
BBC News, Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia has announced that it hopes to put a man on the moon by the year 2020 as part of its $25m space programme.

The Science and Technology Minister, Jamaludin Jarjis, said he would be presenting a plan to the cabinet.

Mr Jarjis says the country needs to build up a pool of trained astronauts in preparation.

But such dreams were almost immediately called into question when the first batch of would-be space explorers struggled with a simple fitness test.

Mission not-impossible

Malaysia is a nation of seemingly limitless ambition.

Having already built what were the world's tallest buildings, it must seem only a short hop from there to the moon.

But there are still serious obstacles to overcome.

On Saturday, the first group from a shortlist of more than 800 would-be astronauts set out to run 3.5km (two miles) in a leisurely 20 minutes.

All were hoping to claim Malaysia's seat on a Russian-led space mission, scheduled for 2007.

But only 12 out of 31 taking part passed the test.

Some observers wondered whether their performance might be linked to the local diet.

Earlier this year, the country announced a programme to put Malaysia's favourite foods into space.

A team is to be sent to Houston in Texas to find out how to process teh tarik (sweet tea), roti canai (flaky griddled pancakes) and nasi lemak (coconut rice) for consumption in zero gravity.

All are absolutely delicious, but rather fattening.

However, no one should write off Malaysia's chances of achieving its latest goal.

The country has transformed itself from a largely rural society to a high-tech led economy in just 20 years, and refuses to believe that any mission is impossible.

roti canai in space might sound absurd
but then again it is more to symbolic thing
i mean like
even NASA pernah hanto spider to space
semate2 nak tgk behaviour spider tu
ni kan pulak roti canai
aku nak tau gak
camne keadaan roti canai dimasak kat zero graviti
camne molekul2 minyak bertindak keatas permukaan
roti canai.
aku tetiba teringat lak
aiskrim yg mencair kat dlm keadaan zero graviti
akan tetap stick kat tangkainye
(hah bile amerika hanto aiskrim ke space takde yg nak membangkang)
aku rase mesti sumthing akan happen bile roti canai dimasak kat dlm keadaan yg same, satu keadaan yg tak sama dgn dapur Dawood.

Well, while I do agree in to a certain extent, but when I read the news, they were conplating to send roti canai into space is to introduce the local cuisine to the ruskies. We damn well can do that on earth, why do we need to go into space to do it?...hahaha

haaa
tu nampak sgt org yg bg statement tu tak best
maksud aku
dlm bnyk2 jawapan kenape nak send roti canai to space
bole yg tu jadi jawapan?
lain la kalo jawap nak bikin eksperimen ke
nak tgk tindakbalas graviti sifar ke
baru nampak berilmiah skit
bg aku tada hal la nak bwk pegi space itu roti canai
belacan pon gua tak kisah
astronaut ngan cosmonaut tu pon kat space makan stew ayam, aiskrim
ni plak roti canai
takyah la nak pertikaikan benda2 remeh camni

manade susah
kalo benda2 melekit ni
susah nak terapung kat space
mungkin depa try kari pekat kot
takpon developt roti canai curry ready dlm roti tu
ala
lagipon roti canai takyah cecah kuah kari pon ok ape?

yup
aku pon pikir psl roti canai paling simple
for the first step
nasi lemak mmg leceh la

tp tu la
bg aku org2 mesia yg pelekeh projek roti canai ni
either:-
-tak piki/ tak tau selama ni astronaut ngan cosmonaut and taikonaut makan ape
-masih ade perasaan mengagungkan Barat lagi
-mmg jenis suka peleceh vision org lain (perangai org kampung ulu)
-tak nampak potensi projek ni dlm industri pemakanan pd masa akan datang

oo macam tu ka.

I have a very simple way of thinking.
I see a lot of things around me that need far more and immediate attention then sending people to space an making the roti canai experiment.

The things I see.. every Malaysian see it as well.
and everytime i see it.. i wonder..does it cost too much to tackle the issue? So this kinda thing bothers me a lot.

for me.. it's not just the roti canai thing.. it's this whole sending-representative-to-space program is a waste.
