Thanks guys for the resources!
In general, overdrive is supposed to emulate the soft clipping of tube amps...pretty much a more mellow tone with more midrange, while Distortion is a harder and more agressive tone, with more emphasis on high frequencies and less mids...
As an example, on this song:
http://www.i-bands.net/audiovault/bands/1682/music.php
Izuan's guitar tone would be what I would call overdrive, while mine and Erylasia's guitar tone is more distortion...of course there are no hard and fast rules
And here is another lame excuse to play that song again! he he he... |

what do you mean dgn bunyi distort hilang bro?
http://www.i-bands.net/audiovault/play.php?band_id=1049&song_id=5820&mode=song_hifi
tapi kalau ko setkan low gain pada distortion pedal, so itu pun kira sound overdrive jugak. _________________ Gelanggang guitar : http://guitarden.starahead.com |

aha~ ok2.. mcm gitu ye eri.. tp overdrive ni x memuaskan hati la.. lagu mcm metallica which uses lot of "e-palm" jd x best bile pk overdrive.. kalo aku naikkan level overdrive, jd berpasir lak.. ke sebab aku pk single coil? or sbb amp laney x ckp best? ke aku kene beli boss distort... ke aku yg x reti main? uhu~ _________________

metal tones in general are distorted. so, jgn la guna overdriven tones. distort it with a stompbox or the highest gain your amp can give.
overdriven tones which are warmer aren't neccesarily 'tak best' pasal ada gunanya, like playing classic rock, blues etc.
i know there are no rules in music but hi-gain distortion wouldn't fit well if you were playing a muddy waters tune, for example (unless you wanna do an XPDC on blues tunes lah). the same goes in the converse situation, although overdriven tones can be found in quieter metallica passages in their 'load' and 'reload' albums.
to sum it up, just guna overdriven and distorted tones mengikut the song's style. _________________ "my small self...like a book amongst the many on a shelf.."
