Background
For 30 years, guitarists have been using foot-operated pedals and switches to control their effects. Xpresense LLC has developed a unique product, Wireless Audio Gesture™ (WAG™), that has the potential to redefine how guitarists play, compose, and interact with the their audience.
The Challenge
Today, guitarists use a wide variety of "effect" units to modify the sound of their instrument. These effects are available with two types of interfaces; a floor-mounted switch (known as a stomp box) and a floor-mounted expression pedal. Interfaces of these types restrict the style of play and the movement of the guitarist. Control of the effects units, whether done by the guitarist or by the crew, manually or automatically, needs to be tightly scripted. It is difficult to adapt effects on the fly to follow the interaction with the audience. Also, there are limits to how rapidly the switching and expressions can be performed, limiting overall creativity.
The Solution
The WAG provides guitarists with a wireless interface to their effects, in the form of a finger ring. Wearing the WAG ring on the finger of the strumming hand (or on another finger), guitarists are able to control any given effect and integrate that control into their playing style. The act of controlling the effects becomes more of an extension of the instrument and the guitarist's playing technique. Combined with the ability to roam away from his gear, the musicians's hand and arm movements add to the performance and stage presence. Importantly, using finger movements enables a more rapid and expressive quality, opening up more avenues of creativity for the guitarist.
