Opening
If the emulsifiers contains the ingredient of pork fat, then i would like to tell you that it is not only in Coffee Bean and & Star Bucks alone but in all the ice-cream and potato chips u can think of.
If however, seeing that the HALAL is posted outside these two outlets said to have been serving porks, don't you think they are rather contradicting themself?
the Emulsifier 471 - Source: cow, pig, egg, animal milk, vegetable
Knowing that the fact we live in a Muslim country (as declared by the 4th Prime Minister in the early years), these companies would have done their research knowing the fact that they should respect their Muslim consumers.
However, if proven that they used the Emulsifier 417 from the course of pork that you are able to summon/sue Coffee Beans & Tea Leaf SDN BHD for breaching the food law act.
findings
As stated above, the emulsifier 471 may also contain cow fats. and the use for this formula is for the oil and water to able to mix together forming the subtance, hence you have your ice-cream, milky candies and potato chips.
If the company do so continue to add its pork fats instead of cow fats into the formula, then by do so remove the sign halal from their products.

Food Additives with a "•" in front of its name shows that it is definitely or possibly Animal Derived.
400 Alginic acid, thickener and vegetable gum, derived from seaweed. Used in custard mix, cordial, flavoured milk, ice blocks, thickened cream and yoghurt.

It has recently been linked with cancer because it may become contaminated when ethylene oxide is added to an inferior product, this results in ethylene chlorohydrin forming, a highly carcinogenic compound. linked to toxic hazards, including ulcers and cancer; the most serious concerns relate to degraded carrageenan, which is not a permitted additive. However, native carrageenan, which is used, may become degraded in the gut. 8, 40
410 Locust bean gum, derived from Carob or Locust bean tree Ceratonia siliqua, a native tree of South America or the Mediterraean depending on which book you read. Thickener and vegetable gum. Used in lollies, cordials, essences, some flour products, dressings, fruit juice drinks. Carob is It is frequently used as a caffeine-free chocolate substitute. 1, 3, 48
412 Guar gum, thickener derived from the seeds of Cyamoposis tetragonolobus of Indian origin. Fed to cattle in the US. od can cause nausea, flatulence and cramps, may reduced cholesterol levels. 48
413 Tragacanth, gum thickener. Resin form the tree Astragalus gummifer. A water soluble gum, used in foods, drugs including nasal solutions, elixirs and tablets. Also used as a binder in cosmetics. 47, 48
414 Acacia, (gum arabic) thickener and gum. Derived from the sap of Acacia Sengal. It is water soluble and easily broken down by the human digestive system.
415 Xanthan gum, thickener and gum. derived from the fermentation of corn sugar with a bacterium. 48
416 Karaya gum, thickener. derived from the tree Sterculia urens from central India. Often used in conjunction with Carob (add 410), in ice cream, custard and sweets. Used as a filler for its capability to multiply its volume by 100 times with the additon of water. 48
420 Sorbitol, artificial sweetener, humectant derived from glucose: either obtained from berries, or synthesised. Used in lollies, dried fruit, pastries, pharmecuetical syrups and opthalmic preparations and is the seventh most widely used preservative in cosmetics. 47

•422 Glycerol, humectant and sweetener sweet, oily colourless alcohol, derived by decomposition of natural fats with alkalis, usually as a by-product of soap making using animal fat or vegetable oil. Can be obtained from petroleum products sometimes synthesised from propylene or fermented from sugar. Used in flexible coatings on sausages and cheeses, also in crystallised and dried fruit, liqueurs and vodka. Conclusion
Then again, it is still arguable about what type of animal fats is in it. Coffee bean & Tea leaf has been in Malaysia, where their first outlet was in Johor in the early 1990's, they have a halal sign stated in their outlet.
But then again, it is up to you to decide.

well, this was explained to me a while ago...well, originally it was jsut called animal fats, and because it was ambiguos as to what type of animal fat and how it was acquired, products containing them didnt sell well. It seems that as well as the muslims in the world believe that it wasnt 'HALAL', the Jewish ppl also didnt believe them to be 'KOSHER' (which is the jewish term for Halal for them).
Now that pretty much left only a very limted market for the product, and sales of items containing 'ANIMAL FAT', if any of you guys remembered some foreign products on Malaysian shelves, were pretty bad. Most of the muslim Malaysians growing up in foreign countries would of probably heard the cliched 'It has animal fat! dont eat it!'.
..so they ambiguosly code named it E471.
A loophole they sorta abused as required by FDA to state all ingredients within a product, but stated that information of E471 is readily available to be 'looked-up' for those concerned.
Right, whos gonna look it up.
If im not mistaken, it was originally classified as vegetable fat, before it was reclassified as animal fat but still assuming the same code. Clever huh?
I had some cross referenced articles in my comp a while ago, but i think ive deleted them all. Hahahaha...bende lain simpan.
