The first concert i went when Deep Purple datang kat Shah Alam.Itupon sbb bapak aku ajak (die gile DP).Sampai kat sana je nampak a good mix of bebudak muda and pakcik2 dan makcik2.Ni jenis makcik2 pakai tudung ngan pakcik2 boroi dan botak (bapak aku tak termasuk dlm kategori tersebut psl die awet muda,six pack dan tak botak  )
First small gig i went was the first small gig aku organize kat Melbourne baru2 ni.Actually more to pertandingan band tp tetiba terus jd gig yg best.
Dalam masa seminggu aku berjaya cari barang dan tempat,which is in Melbourne mmg agak mustahil utk dibuat (ape2 event org biase book at least sebulan lagi awal). Ingatkan takde org datang psl aku send out email sehari sebelum gig.Tup2 penuh tempat tu dgn seratus org yg nak tgk 5 bands perform.

Will divide this into 3 phases.
Phase 1: The first live gig I saw.
Phase 2: First Malaysian underground (the 1st generation)
Phase 3: The nth generation Malaysian underground
Phase 1

Ian Gillan, can't remember exactly, sometime 1981-83. He played Stadium Negara. They opened with Black Night and continued to do mainly DP covers with a few from his solo album.
Blues Gang opened for them. Julian Mokhtar in full 80's regalia and hair.
Phase 2

First Malaysian "underground" gig was probably back in 1992 or 93, in a tiny pub, Andros all the way where Jln Ampang meets Ulu Klang. The only band that stood out was the Infectious Maggots. First time I'd heard anyone doing industrial flavored music in KL. Things got pretty rowdy and the owner threatened to stop the show several times.
There were only 2 people buying drinks at the bar, me and a guy who later became a very good friend. Went to the Life Center, Piccadilly gigs, they were interesting but sound was always atrocious.
I was one of the Dewan FuiChu gigs, top floor S&M Shopping Complex (which I thought was an excellent name for a shopping mall). Thought Stomping Ground was funny, little ripped guy dancing and posturing like Henry Rollins.
If I'm not mistaken they were recording the show for some TV program and were telling people not to swear. Of course, people swore more. It's a punk gig, not the frikkin' Choir Akademi Seni Negara.
Other than bands like Carburateur Dung (which I'll never learn how to spell), Pilgrims, Infectious Maggots, Naked Butterfly (Oz was a frequent house guest and friend who I haven't seen for a very long time), a lot of bands did Sex Pistols (Splatters were my favorite), Clash, Ramone's and skinhead covers.
Phase 3

Stopped going to gigs, career took me out of the country most of the time, until Peter Hassan and Paul Millot, two very old and good friends, started me up again a few years ago.
Hassan invited me over to a gig, the first of the phase 3 gigs I'd see. Hastily put together a band.
Heard R.U.S.H. (now FURNITURE) the first time and was blown away. I had never heard what's defined as "post rock" but it reminded me of old ethereal 80's 4AD artists work with punch.
Started going to Paul's place to play and watch. |

Kalium...that's a very interesting one.....
I disappeared and didn't care about the local scene from around 1997 or 1998 till end of 2004 or beginning of 2005. That's why I only discovered Spunky Funggy's music less than 1 year ago. I still remember seeing their album in Carrefour thinking it's another crappy local indie band. Now I really wanna find the album and I could not find it anywhere...damn!!! |

I heard Wolf runs a toy shop or something like that in AmCorp too. I dunno which shop and who is Wolf actually (I know him because of his famous name) |

Mine was Blast Off gig held at Fu Chow/Fu Chew (I don't know the spelling) association I think right above the shopping complex next to Kota Raya (what's the name of the shopping complex??? damn...I am getting old). This Blast Off gig has no relationship with Astro.
The gig was crowded. There were lots of punks hanging around. I went with a friend who is now married and a retired gig-goer. We were two of the rare non-Malays. I guess the shoppers must be wondering where all these weirdos with white and black t-shirts came from. Some people were staring at the mohawks in amazement. Some turned back or changed direction upon seeing a punk especially women. In my mind, I was thinking "Cool!!! Hooray!!! I am a weirdo!!!" just because I wore a black t-shirt with the word "X'tro" around those people. X'tro was a horror movie - it looked like some kind of metal/industrial band's t-shirt. Subculture, Opposition Party, ...damn, I cannot remember what other bands now....maybe Carburetor Dung, Infectious Maggots, Pilgrims???? Oh..there was an all-girl Singaporean riot-grrrl punk band there (my favourite girl band during those days)...what's the name??? They sounded like Huggy Bear/The Go-Gos
I went home with buzzing sound and headache the following day. I stood too close to the loudspeakers. Now, I keep my distance away from the stage due to this bad experience... |

i was at this gig u mentioned as well. it was one of the special venue other than at Pics. I felt like i was in another country those days.
And i salute u bro for braving enough to show your ass there coz 90% who attended were weirdo malays there...
the babes from S'pore were Psycho Sonique - awesome cute band! love them to death those days...still have pictures of the gig i think. The lyrics go like - 'I'm feeling something, but i dunno what it is...blah blah blah..'..haha
Did u remember one slot where they had a line-up of mohawks singing 'sex and violence'??? simply shocking!! But maybe any punk / Oi concerts which were held those days were just as shocking...(remeber that one big all punk gig in Warp? Battle of the rats or something?..)
gosh - those were groovy 'undeeground' days...nowadays i loathe going to gigs now coz there's nothing special to it and partly coz i am getting old, and most bands now dont really playlah...tried 'layan'ing some gig in the early 2000 but i was never impressed. No guitar solos at all lah all these new bands (save for dejaVoodoo)...so damn boring one.
Bring back the ol skool crowdlah anytime!!
And those days, I loved any single gig by Butterfingers...these guys can really play for the crowd (with emmett of course)! So new bands out ther, do take heed. Learn from the master.
Actually even though they were the quite the new breed for the 'scene' back then...they were simply rockin all the way! U can feel the tightness. Can't really recall any other bands that could top their soul and energy those days...on this note, come back home lah Emmett...
gosh i miss the Pic days....
But my best gig was when i saw The Ramones play in London in 96...their last UK tour...that was one divine gig simply because u got to see the true godfathers of punk in action!
Sadly I missed Sex Pistols re-union tour in Finsbury Park london a few months after that...to think about it, to see Johnny Rotten doin nihilitic ditties wasnt really something i look forward to...hehe. If only Sid was still alive! |

I think i was at the gig in Ampang u mentioned...wasnt the place tiny? And the original Flop Poppy played there too with Radhi OAG on vocals?? Yes people, Radhi was a Flop Poppy back then...hehe...now he is a dad.
I think I played RM5 to enter. Went there alone coz nobody in my college layan any of the stuff i dig. (I did my alevels circa 92-94 in Shah Alam b4 i flew to England)
I remember Fathul...he's like an icom to some extent. Do you guys know that one member from Ruff Edge is his younger brother...haha...abang industrial, adik RnB..nice combo. Janji boleh jual! hehe
This thread really brings a lot of fond memories...
for info, I was a gig organiser myslef sometime in 99 kot...tapi takdelah concert rock, but it was an achievement for me still...the ones i did was known as Friday Nite Live gigs - held at KLBC Cafe Bangsar. I was in the Kreatif 10 sen entourage...we provided platforms for new 'talents' to let themselves loose....or something like that.
So anybody heard of this gig? It was more like the open-mic gig thing...Ruff Edge, Farah of M'sian Idol, Shayna, Farah Diya and lotsa new talents were my regular performers those days...
And the best part is that Mr Paul, the owner of Paul's Place was a regular drummer for one blues band that was formed to play there. Try asking Paul about this, he should remember. The band's name was probably Muddy and The Cronies or something. I actually played bass for his band once I think...but i sucked lah...
And I remember having to go to Paul's house once in Bangsar to borrow his drumkit from his garage...tapi takut nak ambik coz he had this big dog guarding the house...hehe...
Gosh, i havent met Paul since those days...wonder if he still remembers me?
I had my own band there too myself with my ad-hoc band once a while...we did rock song covers mostly...we werent that bad.
Also had this band full of 30++ guys those days...a mixutre of doctors and engineers...they play great 80s rock of Mr Big and the likes...the lead guitarist, a doctor, was damn good!! Respek siot...
