dr bode
i just read your article in rottw...nice one! congrats!
anyways, jsut wondering if we've met...
i used to organise this 'kreatif 10 sen friday nite live gig' in KL best coffee cafe (KLBC), in jalan telwai 3, bangsar back in 99 and there was this band of 30-year old guys that performed for the gig.
The band did this Mr Big cover if i'm not mistaken, and they introduced themselves as a mixture of engineers and doctors.
If my memory serves me well, the guitarist was a doctor too and he was one fine guitarist indeed - so was that guy you?? (He had a stack of stopboxes attached to this woody DIY pedal board which looked kinda weird but cool)
I think he looked a bit like you as well and i'm not surprised if that was you.
The first bad that played that nite before the band i mentioned was a blues band, and the drummer was mr Paul himself (that groovy scientist all right, of paul's place) ...And ruff edge and farah diya performed there as well - and they were just normal street performer kids back then.
My band ada main jugak malam tu, did some rock song cover but i think we kinda sucked...hehe..
so do all these this ring any bells to you?? ni ala-ala jejak kasih lah..hehe..
anyways, if you're not that guy...then he must be another doctor whose good with guitars as well...i salute all of them still!
rock on doc! |

Whoa man! That was me and my band...we were called Redline that night(we change names all the time!) Talk about a small world! That was my very last gig/jam session that I had since 1999...after that the only thing I did were just the odd studio sessions...but strictly no live playing at all...until I opened for Neil Zaza/TM Stevens on 29th Sep recently.
Yeah man...I still remember that night...Ruffedge were still unsigned...did you guys play before or after us? Because I remember a band consisting of UK Grads belting out a kick ass performance...was that you guys?
He he...you remembered my weird pedal board eh? Weird pedal board for weird setup for a weird guitarist Thanks for the kind words about our performance...it was a result of a rushed 2 hour rehearsal...1 jam tune, 1 Mr. Big cover and 1 original tune penned by Anwar, or ab, as he is known here in i-bands I sucked that night, but I knew at least I was LOUD! He he he...
Glad to meet again silbi! |

i am speechless...!! whoaa...that was you man! small world indeed huh??
...i think we did shake hands kot? tapi tak sempat sembang coz time tu gue busy giler setup stage yg tak macam stage tu. U remember the pillar I the middle of the stage there??? hehe..that was one groovy stage, aint it?
yupp..i was really impressed by your band, esp the guitar solos...that was crackin!! Actually, sampai sekarang i've been wondering where is that awesome band now??...a bunch of engineers and doctors rockin man! Woo hoo…..
And sampai sekarang still dok ingat the way your vocalist introduce bands members malam tu...he said ...engineers lah, doctor lah..and when it was his turn, he said he was just the vocalist...funny!
And yes, the band that played after you guys was my band...and we were partly a bunch of UK grads, tapi temp band jelah...coz i was the organiser, nak panggil band nak suruh perform leceh, so form band sendiri je lah….But thx for the compliment.
It was a just a 2 week old band...i sang and played guitar, my bro was on bass....huhu....we all so takut siot coz tak terror ...but belasah je lah. It was one helluva fun nite. I was a banker back then, and my bro was an accountant of sort, and our drummer was kinda of architect..so tu yg best tu…kira band kita macam your band jugak ler due to the diverse profession of ppl in it…
But sorry if we cant pay u anything back then...we did that entirely with our own resources and contacts...the true spirit of underground if you could call it...chewahh! But doing it, and seeing ppl having fun to it was worth every money and energy spent…
And I’m glad to say that most ppl who’d performed there are now going somewhere now already, like Ruff Edge, Farah M’sian Idol, Farah Diya, Shayna, Ferhad (yes, tak tipu!)..etc…
until now kalau jumpa ruff edge, sure dia panggil gue orang lama..hehe..
silbi's my online nick - ppl call me Yin actually. So in kreatif 10 sen back then i was mainly in-charge of getting new unknown 'artistes' - and time tu memang ruff edge one of was our main performers.
i didnt know who contacted your band for that gig but that was probably Dhojee...he was in THR radio back then. The other two from our ‘movement’ were Nachi, from THR and Amir Muhammad, that funny write now turned indie filmmaker...
i think that was our last gig that we organised there...then we went to do something at the actors studio and Grubbs pun...then we toned down and sume tetiba nak buat independent films…
(And that’s how the birth of M’sian indie film began, long before Yasmin’s Sepet or Ho Yuhang’s stuff. But that is another story…).
Kalau pernah dengar indie films - Lips to Lips and Gedebe, that was mainly from the same bunch of guys. I did the music for Gedebe...well, sort of...it sucked anyways...hehe...(but the online review did puji the music which was kinda cool)
Then i became a freelance writer for Klue for a year whilst having a dayjob as a banker (yawn!)...But now gue dah tukar profession. Now I’m a corporate geek for a TV station. Working in a tv station rocks!
The latest activity from our gang back is ongoing now – It is the movie Salon showing now - Dhojee's the exec producer for it and the band in a few scenes there is my current band now...we play indo-poplah for the scene...a fun shoot indeed. Go and watch people! hehe...the guy with the guitar is me playing next to the dude from x-factor is me…
I was actually involved in some songs for the movie soundtrack…buat demo je…
Hmm…actually until now i'm aching to organise something like that again tapi takde kaki coz sume geng dah macam malas, and partly coz getting older, but maybe one fine day....
Eh..penat type...pm me your contact number...we should do teh tarik when you are free..sesapa kat KL nak join boleh lah...(nak ajak jamming pun boleh, tapi malu pulak...i play silly ramones songs only..haha...)
regards
ps - I still dig your pedal board…you should patent it man or sell it as vintage rare item in ebay! |

I only eat jam or get caught in a traffic jam though...haha |

Ok what really happened to the band?...I think a quote from ab would best describe it:
aB wrote: | btw, these are the same friends whom we fired, then they fired u, then fired me, then i re-joined, then they fired me again, then they wanted u to join but u fired them b4 they can even say 'eh', then i joined, then sacked the vocalist, then found nuendo, i fired the whole band... |
silbi wrote: | And sampai sekarang still dok ingat the way your vocalist introduce bands members malam tu...he said ...engineers lah, doctor lah..and when it was his turn, he said he was just the vocalist...funny! |
Oh...he's actually a law grad who joined an accounting firm...I think now he's running a business...down to earth guy...what you dont know is Azuar is a helluva guitarist and keyboard player
silbi wrote: | But sorry if we cant pay u anything back then...we did that entirely with our own resources and contacts...the true spirit of underground if you could call it...chewahh! But doing it, and seeing ppl having fun to it was worth every money and energy spent… |
Yeah...it was helluva fun! We didnt expect any money of course...we were just so glad somebody is letting our shit band play at all!
silbi wrote: | And I’m glad to say that most ppl who’d performed there are now going somewhere now already, like Ruff Edge, Farah M’sian Idol, Farah Diya, Shayna, Ferhad (yes, tak tipu!)..etc…until now kalau jumpa ruff edge, sure dia panggil gue orang lama..hehe.. |
Whoa...that's an impressive list alrite! Sad to say that some of the performers and bands are still unknown losers today...(ehem ehem...terasa pulak aku...)

That's an impressive CV man...whoa you played in 'Salon' besides Danny X Factor? At least you appear as yourself! Danny actually mimed my guitar parts in another movie(kononnya dia main lah!) Tau lah muka aku seposen...tak bagi masuk wayang! Anyway, next soundtrack with my guitars on it would be Rosyam Noor's 'Castello'...the very first thing you will hear on the movie is my geetar! Heh heh heh! Start2 lagi dah spoil citer!
Yeah...we should meet up some day![/quote] |

Wah, Bode, you're my new guitar idol dude,
It's more realistic for me to idolize you than Steve Vai anyway, sebab I'm an overseas student jugak, and one who's striving to be a better guitarist, hehe.
Anyway, can I ask you a question?
I'm interested in playing jazz, but I don't know where to start. I read the article, and it mentioned that you played some jazz. How'd you start playing it? |

totziens - the ramones are my idols anytime...but some of their lyrics are really a bit silly...haha...sadly some of them are gone now....RIP!
bode -
i'm actually a bit busy churning out Board papers now but for the sake of music, i'm typing this still. My workplace is gonna be a bit more busy now since we had just bought over ntv7. So in line with the corporate exercise which we are having now, I will officially name my band Mediaprimadonna...haha
pity...you guys had to sack each other. Cannot claim constructive dismissal ke? hehe Redline rocked anyway and the legacy shall live! If i ever get lobang to organise gig or something, i'd surely would want you guys to appear again...
I guess my CV is kinda exciting to a certain extent but i got into this tv station purely via my corporate background. So no one here really knows about my groovy activities back then....probably i could enlighten 8TV's COO about this and he could take him under his wings...haha
Azuar great guitar player as well? Wow…you ppl all damn talented…all my talented buddies have now gantung their guitar and only concentrating on being full time hubbies, Me still solo, so tu lah pasal main gitar lagi kot…hehehe…
Btw – loser don’t get themselves appear in ROTTW…I used to have my 15 mins of fame those days (a few newspaper articles and a stint appearance on TV3) coz a lot of ppl were quite impressed by what we were doing back then…but sadly great things sometimes don’t last for long…but life goes on!
For Salon – it was not with Danny Xfactor. It’s with Zach. And just for the record, muka gue bukan muka wayang pun…but maybe the band blended in with the background nicely…haha…
I believe Zach xfactor (aka Zach Ubu), is the most talented from the whole lot coz he sings and plays the guitar reasonably well. I think much of this is becoz he hails from East M’sia. You knowlah, most guys and even girls from that part of the world play six strings well enough…(Afundi Linda!) so I kinda restecp (Ali G!) him…
Actually, he even sang some parts of his own composition for the movie, while strumming his guitar on some hill in Hulu Langat while charming the lead awek.
About your movie soundtrack - whoa…if I go to see Castello, it’s purely because I wanna hear your licks man! At least that’s a full feature full budget movie. I’m here still doing indie-ish film – but love it nonetheless,,
Eh…somebody said that our new radio station people here is interviewing some groovy chicks outside…hmm…curious pulak ni
Xaph – I concur u…having him as a guitar idol would be a more realistic approach..u overseas where? Exposed yourselves to all types of music while you’re there, at lest when you are back, you not only have a scroll with you, but a helluva lot of experience… Wish i could go back to england, but its sooooo darn expensive...
Sorry if I bore all you guys here… |

yeah, RIP to the Ramones. I was shocked about the news when I read about it. I still remember the moment I read about the new. I was in a hotel in Tokyo reading a newspaper and came across it. My company sent me there for some system support task for a week.
Yeah, they have silly lyrics. I love them because I always feel happy when listening to them (they don't have that many sad songs). I believe they inspired other bands to write silly lyrics too...one of them is the Japanese band called Shonen Knife. My first attempt lately to write lyric and create melody with the help of Huzai....it was also inspired by Ramones simplicity and silly lyric |

I'm in Melbourne, Australia currently, studying at the University of Melbourne. I've a band here; we play a bit of the blues, and we've done about two gigs this year. It was nothing big, but it was great fun (and good money too ) I'm more of a metalhead myself, tapi metallers don't get much respect when it comes to playing at venues and stuff, heh.
I'm coming home on the 29th of November, woo! Looking forward to start hanging around with my studio friends once again, heheh. |

Aku background penyebok jelah...takde dialog scene pun. The guys i know who did Salon wanted a band scene...and since we're just around the corner from their production office, and we had some songs, we were 'recruited'...alang2 nak perform, kasi terus masuk panggung lah kan dah cable besar ada....so there u go...bidan terjun.
and the best part is that they might still 'use' us for some other movie projects which require 'band' performances...and for the record, we played live during the shoot...no mimimg2 one...haha..
Masa shoot, director cakap action, we all terus jam our hearts out.... (chewahh) ...macam terror...Sadly, our scene keluar adalah 1 minit kot in total.
so kalau ada apa2, maybe boleh consider pakai your i-band tshirt tu...hehe...FOC kan?? cun ke tshirt tu?
Anyways, dah alang2 cite ni. lu orang pergilah tengok Salon..cite tu ok...a lot different then the crop (that 'crop' not 'crap' ok! protokol sikit...) that our Datuk Y Haslam or Prof produces...Then after watching it, if you happen to like it, tell your frends to watch it...if you hate it, tell them to watch it too...haha...the keyword is 'go and watch it!!!'
But seriously, its a cool movie. It has the indie feel to it, and all those babes in there will seriously get you glued to your seat. As a ex-reviewer/writer of Klue magazine, i give it my thumbs up (tapi ni memang bias opinion ler)
Actually, part of the reason why i wanted to be in it was becoz Jojo Struys and Chelsea Ng are in it too....now they're good frends on mine...ooo....semangat muhibbah katakan...
Jojo could really be a hot goth babe i tell ya with that long hair and mysterious eyes of hers...oooops...lari topik dah ni..
bode - hope to see you in more magazines soon. IF i'm still with klue, i'd lobby them to have a feature on you...tapi dah tarak cable sana dah...tapi takat nak masuk Tv3's Nona or MHI gue boleh adjust sikit kot...hehehe.
xaph - i wish i had the blues...but i only know that blues flat5 scale only...hmmm |

Eh...u were in Salon. My colleague's twin brother was doing something for the movie too. His surname is Woo (not John Woo I suppose)...I dunno the name. I have just asked my colleague whether his brother would need sound tracks etc for his future movie, etc. Maybe u know him.... |
