yupp totz...
i know woo ming jin coz he's the director...but he's kinda new in the scene coz i believe he'd just came back from the US recently.
Actually he did a good job for salon. THe next project here would be another teen movie and a story about susuk...cant wait! Itd be under this new 'company' called Altenate Studio here which will be focusing on indie-ish movies to be shot on HiDef videos...
really hope salon will do good in cinemas...

It's more realistic for me to idolize you than Steve Vai anyway, sebab I'm an overseas student jugak, and one who's striving to be a better guitarist, hehe.
Anyway, can I ask you a question?
I'm interested in playing jazz, but I don't know where to start. I read the article, and it mentioned that you played some jazz. How'd you start playing it? |
Thanks xaph! But bro...u better be idolising Steve Vai man...better to aim high...rather than aim low towards somebody crap like me!
I didnt play jazz, always wanted to, but never nailed it...I have played stuff with jazz-y slants but never proper jazz...coz I dont know heads or tails what it's about. But I've been asking several of my musicians friends who do play jazz for some shortcuts...and all of them stressed the point of choosing your fav jazz musician and listening to them endlessly, until suddenly you start churning out jazz licks naturally without thinking. See...no amount of theory can make you play jazz...but even without theory...if you suddenly start feeling it...you will play jazz man...
My theory has gone into the drain...learned it and forgotten all about it...I came across a piece I transcribed when I was 12 years old...now I cant even make sense of what the hell I transcribed!
xaph...you look very familiar la bro...

Steve Vai's level is too high for me to attain because I can't dedicate my life 24/7 to music like him, unfortunately, I love his works, but they're too artistic. My kind of guitar idol is more akin to Alexi Laiho, the main guitarist of Children of Bodom. Musical idol, more like Nobuo Uematsu. (Japanese video game composer.) The similar thing about the both of them is that they produce very melodic music. My kind of thing, hehe.

Hehe, thanks for the tip Bode. Thing is, your suggestion what I've been doing for the past couple of months. I've been listening and listening and listening to jazz music endlessly and have been trying to emulate my fav artistes.
Currently I'm listening to Norman Brown; I like his smooth jazz style, but making licks and solos spontaneously that actually sound jazzy is still an impossible feat for me. I wish I enrolled for classes dulu; tapi I never had the time anyway.
You know, I've a video of Joe Pass playing and teaching solo jazz guitar. Sepanjang the whole video:
1) Mouth terbuka, mata terbeliak
2) Tangan berkerut kat kepala
3) Otak tengah pikir, "WTF? Gila tak logic ah!"
"Now this G13 can fit in with an extended 7th dominant chord, tapi we add a bit of 6th spice here, and since G is the relative minor of the triad of blah blah blah"... you get my drift. Sangat technical, and I can't think (or know of) of all that theory on the spot! ^_^
I'm very inclined towards metal, because it's what I began with, and it's what I've been playing for several years until I bertukar arah a bit lately.
Oh, and Bode, I posted something in that Melodic Funk Gig thread of yours too, concerning the video upload. Please check it out.

dr bode - thx for the consent...so i wanna share just a a bit here, which is along the similar lines of metal guitarists
Have u guys ever heard of Evergrey? Well, I just knew about this band last week actually...a bit late perhaps?
Actually I just saw their live dvd and I am now pretty much impressed by this band, esp on the guitar rowess of the lad vocalist. The lead vox can really nail his guitar solos i tell ya...he did some pretty slick shredding and appregio moves in between his singing which makes my jaws dropped...and some back to back solo with his lead guitarist too...great stuff indeed!
To top that, the concert showed that he's one fine singer as well..the band did more than 15 tracks and never did he show that he was losing breath in his singing...and for the record, despite them being a goth-esque prog metal band, he sings, and not growl like some other similar bands like that from that part of the continent.
Probably u guys should really check the dvd out! It's entitled 'Evergrey - A Night to Remember' Just read any of its dvd concert reviews out there and you'd understand why i'm feeling very excited to share this magnificent band with you guys. If only our country could produce such technically proficient band...well, we do have Metalasia but I'm craving for more...or do we have a lot more already? A peep into Homegrown and Blast Off sadly has not revealed much on the exisatence of these types of bands...
On jazz - i have this 'the bible of jazz chord' which i got for like nearly 8 years i could never make sense on the chords formation in it...not with my tiny fingers that is! So i guess i'll just leave my just aspiration as that...hehe
xaph - children of bodom is cool as well...have yet to see any concert recordings of them but their music sounds pretty nasty indeed. The Final Countdown cover sounded really cool... |

That’s right xaph…but the problem with me is, I still set the same standards for judging myself with the standards I judge my fav guitarists…even though it would take me probably weeks/months to get the same amount of practice whatever they practice in just one day…simply because I’ve got day/night jobs(just like most of us here), while they are full time musicians. Maybe that’s why I injured my hand…because I was trying to squeeze 6 hours of practice into just 1 hour…so…don’t be like me!

The secret is to jam and jam and jam...and record your jam sessions and analyse yourself later...during jamming sessions, use whatever you know...and even do the things that you never thought of doing before. Because jam sessions are supposed to be fun(dont worry about mistakes) and a good place to try things out. Then as you jam more and more...your improvisation skills will develop.
The same thing applies to blues and jazz as well...even if you memorise the whole book of theory, that doesnt guarantee you can play jazz...you may be playing lotsa exotic scales and chords, but it wont be jazz...but if you eat, breathe jazz, you may find yourself playing it despite not knowing that much theory.
Another example is blues...see...the pentatonic scale is so simple...but so many players only sound like they are playing the pentatonic scale and not blues, even though they are trying hard to play blues. Whereas a blues player will sound bluesy even if he's using a different scale than the pentatonic scale!
So...eat, breathe and play your favourite style |

good advice there doc!
i'm only exposed to pentatonic and major scale...so the problem is that all my freakin impromptu solos will normally sound the same. Have tried adding what paul gilbert (in videos, of course) refer to as 'dynamics' to my playing but still, i feel like everything sounds plain and boring to me...
recently have tried to venture upon appregios but gosh, it is freakin hard to do it 'clean' whilst in distortion mode...got into this ever since i tried to do the solos for 'creeping death' (via tab book of course). Until now i still suck! gosh!
i'm sure some of you had gone to marty friedman's clinic when he was here - to this moment i could still remember his advice to those who wanna get better - try to play live wherever you can! so play play play!
hehe...easy to talk theory innit? suruh main bunyi cam haram je...hehe... |
