Hi, anyone care to share any experiences and recommendations of some good mic pre-amps?

(No, no Behringer please. They are noisy as f#$k.)

I am looking for a four-channel pre-amp, preferably. 8 would be better. But I don't know where to begin.

Reading reviews on the internet is fine, but being able to FIND them in Malaysia is another thing.

I wouldn't mind if the price is a *bit* steep. You normally have to pay a bit more for a cleaner sound anyway. But nothing too expensive and out of the question, though!

Thanks!

Hmm. No pricelist on that page.

The 5050 looks like it's a bit expensive though. If the 5001 is cheaper, I'd definitely go for the 5001 because it''s got 4 channels, and I don't really need the compressor in the 5050.

Haha, he just said "NO BEHRINGER".

Yo, Norman. Just signed up on iBands. Hows it been cikgu? But, on a more serious note, for the cost, Behringer does perform exceptionally well. Been using a MIC2200 2-channel preamp for almost 3 yrs now, and it has served well. With current manufacturing standards and procedures, noise is practically, never an issue, so I'm not sure what prompted you to make that statement. Granted if you were to crank the gain all-the-way-up, you'd definitely hear noise, but in day-to-day situations, a noisy environment would be the main contributing factor.

By the way, feel free to check out my studio. Details are as below.

or you can consider : Studio Projects VTB1

The new Studio Projects VTB-1 is the ultimate in low cost mic preamplifier technology. Incorporating true class A/B switching, the VTB-1 is a totally discrete circuit. Unique to the VTB-1 is the "Tube Drive". The Tube Drive is a variable drive to a 12AX7, that allows the user to blend as little, or as much of the Tube Drive they want. This VTB-1 allows the user the most flexibility of any mic preamplifier in it's price class

Hi guys, Soundbuz is still pretty much alive but has been moved to Damansara, please check it out on the contact page. Just got to take care TL Audio sales in Malaysia started on June 2005.

Dunno what ur budget is but if u have the patience to search u may find a fairly new Api mic pre for around USD250 (rm 850) on ebay. It means dealing with wire transfers and shipping and of course customs. I used an old api on about 6 tracks recently and it was just great.

Presonus Bluetube DP. Not bad. Didnt really do a full testing on it but it's ok. For a 2-channel , less than Rm900 , i think it's ok. Furthermore , presonus' reviews are really great if you check it out from magazines and other sources.

This is probably a long shot but, in Malaysia, is there any place to find an... 8 channel mic pre... within the RM 1000 - 1500 budget... !?!?!?!

I'm probably dreaming... hahah...

Hi Nash,

Checked out your band's song. It's a well written piece of work!!! I used to stay in Tmn Melawati, but I've moved to Bkt Antarabangsa (not too far away). Commute to my studio in TTDI is a little far, but I've gotten used to it.

Back to your topic, I was having a thought about 8-channel mic-pres under RM1500 and suddenly I stumbled upon the answer -> Its sitting on top of my desk = Behringer UB2442FX mixer. (YUCKS!!!)

Dissappointed??? Well, I know that it isn't a dedicated standalone piece of gear. But there are those of us who may require 8-channels of decent/reasonable mic-pre, on a shoestring budget, any desktop small-format mixer will do the job adequately.

Of course, we could all wish for a Focusrite Octopre or RME.

P.S. I find the subtle advertising that occurs in this forum a little tickling at times. Heck, I'm guilty of that too (Looks at my signature)

Hi JD,

Thanks for the kind comments. Where did you used to stay in Melawati? I'm hearing a lot about your studio, I really need to get my fat ass up and go pay your studio a visit one day. Smile

I run a recording/practise studio myself, in Melawati Squre, right in front of 7 Eleven.

Hahaha. Unfortunately, that's what I'm using now, and I find that I just don't have enough mic pres for a live-off-the-floor recording situation (I usually end up compromising a bunch of things). Yucks, yes, but it'll do for now. It'll just have to do.

Plus, my desktop space is getting very cramped. I was thinking of something I can just stick into the rack beside me...

What are you using in your studio right now? Sometimes, if its for live demo recordings, its not worth spending the money on a dedicated 8-chanenel micpre. You're probably better of getting a bigger board.

When I was planning to setup my current studio, I planned to get some dedicated preamps. But after careful consideration, I realized that it wasn't worth investing the money on a handful of "name" micpre channels.

Instead, I went and got myself a 32-channel mixer because it handles so many other tasks as well :

24 mic inputs
Routing
Headphone Monitoring

Just to get separate units to handle these important tasks in the studio would have cost far more than getting a single large board. Plus having a big board looks "cool" Cool
