via email from rafil. some funny sh|t.

onwards.

Greetings and salutations!

Before this report, I'd like to thank the following people:

a) SONIA RANDHAWA (CIJ): Press conference was her idea. I believe this
was
one of the factors that sped up the detainee's release. Sonia: I
promise
never to run my "Balakong Afghani Children's Liquor Fund" con within 50
meters of your office.

b) ARUL (SUARAM): For providing all the media contacts.

c) RONNIE LIU (DAP NGO Bureau Chief): For negotiating the detainee's
release.

d) All the panel member (Below)

e) Everyone from the independant music community who came and gave us
their
support.

We had a fantastic turn out at the press conference held yesterday
(2/1/06)
at 2pm at Paul's Place. For the first time in Paul's Place since it's
conception, and event started ON TIME.

We had press coverage from almost all the local dailies (with the
exception
of Harian Metro) and a correspondent from the BBC news service. Two TV
stations sent their crew, TV3 and 8TV.

The independant music community's response was excellent. It was great
to
see hardcore punks, skin heads, metal (all colors and weights), indie
(English, Malay and Chinese) all united for a common cause.

The PC was held to:

**********************

a) Highlight the fact that there were still 4 people being detained at
the
Brickfields lock up: Aby, Shak, Fahmi and David. All detainees' basic
rights
had been disregarded by what the community considers an unlawful
detainment.

b) Articulate the importance and relevance of the independant music
community.

c) Highlight the impact this arbritrary genre (Black Metal)
demonization
that was created and sensationalized by tabloid Harian Metro and digest
Mastika and further propagaged by other mainstream press, is having on
the
independant music community

Chair: Rafil Elyas (Disarseter Records)
Panel:
Amer Hamzah (lawyer)
Jac SM Kee (feminist activist)
Mohd Iskandar Zulkarnain (First Stance Recordings label owner)
Khain Adlin Abd Aziz (with Second Combat)
Azmyl Yunor (lecturer, musician)
Paul Millot (solar energy specialist, musician)
Julian Mokhtar (professional musician)

Joe Kidd provides a good report of this on his website, so I'm not
going to
repeat it:

http://ricecooker.kerbau.com/?p=236#more-236

Just wanted to add a few more observations
***************************************************

Rina from 8TV began her question by apologizing on behalf of her
colleagues
in the media for the black metal sensationalization.
After the PC approximately most of the media and attendees followed Mr.
Ronnie Liu (DAP NGO Bureau Chief) to the Brickfields Police Station.
Ronnie
marched in and negotiated the release of the remainding 4 detainees.
Aby,
Fahmi and Shak were bailed out by Iskandar (I think) at about 5pm and
charged under the printing act for the t-shirts, zines and flyers. I
went to
bail out David who was finally released at 10pm. I must say ASP Tony
who was
processing David's bail documents and other officers I met with there
were
very courteous and professional to me. I don't know if it was because I
was
wearing office attire and a tie instead of my preferred black t's and
jeans.

The waiting area was on the first floor in a 4(?) storey building
painted,
you guessed it, blue and white, balcony/walkway on the outside. In the
airconditioned room, there was a TV stuck on TV2, playing Chinese soaps
and
comedies. It was connected to a processing area where paperwork was
being
processed. It took over 5 hours to get him processed. During that time:

Too late to bail
****************

Relatives of one of the detainees came, only to find that the person
(to
avoid possible embarrasment, let's call him Abu) they wanted to bail
out
was already released and charged under the printing act. The older of
the
two gentlemen, an ex police/military force senior officer had a chat
with
the ASP Tony said that this would teach Abu a lesson for going to
places
"the police didn't like".

Rockin' Detectives
******************

Had a chat with several officers. They were wondering what I had to do
with
the incident, they had assumed I was a lawyer. Told them I played at
that
venue frequently and Paul was and old friend. Turns out that some of
the
guys there jam with the police band and we talked shop for a while.
Their
jam studio was just below the processing area.

Black Metal Doodles
*******************

One of the officers had a sketch of a skull with a cross coming out of
its
head with the words BLACK METAL in that that cool Metal font. I took a
look
at it and mentioned, "Now that's terribly WRONG". The officer (or could
have
been a visitor) said, "Yes, terrible isn't it?". I replied, "The cross
needs to be inverted for it to be Black Metal, otherwise you've got to
change the words to 'Christian Rock' or 'Slayer'". I think the point
was
missed.

Black Metal Rights Champion
***************************

One of the officers saw me on the TV3 news report and come up to me,
pointed
his finger and said, "Bela hak Black Metal!" (Black Metal rights
champion).
I fought the urge to flash him the sign of the Devil.I told him I
championed
the rights for all musicians except Mawi.

Merchandise movement
********************

A little after 8pm, I looked down and they were transferring what
appeared
to be boxes of black t-shirts, badges from one building to another.
Couldn't
find anyone who know what they were doing with the stuff.

9pm see David
**************

David is brought up for finger printing and photo taking. He's wearing
orange cover alls with "Brickfields Lock Up" on it. He's hand cuffed
but
looks fine.

At about the same time, Ben and CK arrive to feed me, I hadn't eaten
anything all day and was getting irritable.
CK's first words to David were, "Hey, your baju like Slipknot, one.
Afterwards can take back aaa?".

10pm Release
************
Approximately 10pm the processing is complete, we all go to another
building, David's got to return his Skipknot garb.
We're clapping as David appears in his street clothes. A cop looks back
and
comments "Happy, dapat balik?" (Happy, you're finally out of here).

Now we've got to figure out how to get the equipment out.

I saw David came out of police station. Seeing an innocent guy with handcuffs and dirty overalls just makes me feel like crap.

But, to my surprise, he share a glittering moment with us (Rafil, Ben and me) when he was processing to get out. He did not appear to feel bad about the situation. Remained calm and still able to smile. I was expecting him to express some 'pissedoff' statement after being detained for so long.

Rafil shared part of his only meal of the day with David; the fries from McD.
While he was still in the room processing with the Lokap uniform and photoshoot, he even shared the fries with the police.

I'm glad to see David out of the cell. From what he said, i can tell that the cell was no where near comfortable - bare unpolished cement floor that's never been clean with just a mineral bottle to be refilled from a single tap (which can be used for all other purpose) and shared with a bunch of Lokap-mates.

We managed to see all the detainees released. David was the last person.

KUDOS for the following:

Rafil Elyas - the hero of the week for setting this whole event up in pursuit for the release for the detainee and resolving the Black Metal Issue

Ronnie Liu(DAP) - for using his power to demand for the releases of the people

Surendran - for seeking justice for the people

All the panel speakers at the conference - For the battle spoken words

Everyone who supported this.

We shall see the end of Music Genre discrimination and better days for gigging and rocking.

any experience? bode? synthdude?

i just borak-borak with ajeep about handing out flyers to the public, not about the raid, but informational ones, like what's black metal, and what's underground and what's indie bands all about..... no offense to any black metal musicians, but i figure while the issue is hot, it might help spreading the words.... (repeat, the flyers will not relate to the issue at all).... yeah old skool.

we can donate a little to photocopy the flyers and distribute, well either that or by emails

i experienced it those years...my band was just on our 3rd song when the so called 'mat lakloks' in the front row started to get wild when we were playing a scorpion song and the officials dah mula panic...and immediately the power was turned off and we were asked to leave the stage..i think that was 1983 kt pesta konvo Uitm....frust betol aku.crowd punye la ramai penoh padang uitm tu..

sam, good idea pasal flyers tu..let me know what i can do to help (walaupun aku jauh di mata...)

i am really touched by my own parents.

my mother suspected i was arrested when she noticed i have been coming home for 2 days buying every single newspaper i can find and cutting out articles like a maniac.
The the jamtank forum, i-bands, she has accessed to it.. i think i will behave now with i-bands and jamtank.. mummy and daddy is reading.

I had to come clean and admitted the fact i was one of the 400 detainees.

i am really proud of my parents, as my dad was really supportive in my stand and would give me help if i need and they will be there for me 24/7.

i was in tears when my mom hugged me and my dad pat me on my head. and they say next time invite them to the things i do, gigs and all.

and i said to them jokingly... mum, daddee... not metal la like that.

after my image as a metal vox gone la...

they both laughed

Geng Black Metal menyusup

Oleh Yusri Abdul Malek dan Amir Mamat
am@hmetro.com.my

oh
baju serba hitam je dah black metal
i guess tan sri lim kok wing tu
atuk black metal gak la eh?
sbb die pakai serba hitam on daily basis tau
sama cam aku gak
dah 5 tahun pakai baju hitam
(sbb aku takleh nak color-match kan baju ngan seluar aku,dan barula designer pakai hitam Razz )

saranan aku kpd media ni

TUNJUKKAN BUKTI AL-QURAN KENA KOYAK DAN KESAN AIR MAZI DAN TAPAK KASUT ATAS AL-QURAN TU

takde bukti jgn ckp bnyk la wei
kalo setakat amik testimonial dr satu due org (yg aku ragui kesahihannya dr segi pembabitan dlm black metal) tanpa bukti kukuh, tak payah la wei.

entah2 al-quran yg budak tu nampak kena koyak tu pun, bukannye al-quran tapi kitab berbahasa arab yg dianggap sbg al-quran sbb nampak tulisan jawi atasnye.(korang pepaham la bebudak sekarang ade yg buta al-quran dan jawi)

Somehow, I just need to be Free

Call me what you want, say it anyway you like
It doesn't matter what you think or say
I'll still be going it my own way
Somehow, I just need to be free.

Chorus:
Free, I just want to be free.
Free to choose the things I do
Free , no chains on my soul
Somehow, I just need to be free

Does my independence trouble you?
Do you fear my different mind?
Though I be as a feather in the breeze
Do you see me as a raging kind?

Chorus:

I may disappoint you (Let's just say I lack taste)
But my Life is mine, (to lead it free is no waste)
You can't hold it against me
if somehow,I just need to be free
