The devil has such an underrated role in the inspiration of music.

Hmm...that makes me wonder where the melody playing in my mind in the morning (always in the morning) comes from.....

just feel like reliving this thread -

i try to write songs too...but my problem is mainly to get the correct chords for the melody...for instance, if i already have the correct chord for verse, then bila nak masuk chorus...i dunno which chords to use...i know there's this family chords in music that i need to follow - so tu yg tak reti tu..

that's my biggest prob too... plus the bridge... solo... etc etc... n one more.. i'm so worse at writing lyrics...

Maybe next time I can help u with the lyric...I am not good either...perhaps 2 brains are better than 1, right? Very Happy

kewl2... lookin 4ward to it...

as for me, i write songs when i hear the melody first from my guitarist.

and then i try and feel what he is feeling when he wrote the rythm, then i confrim with him.

after knowing what is the feel of the song, i will imagine that i am in my guitarist's shoe and the words just come out like that.

If i write my own songs, i tend to like it short and simple but catchy.
my lyrics is mostly written in french as i write gothic tune only. weird. no happy rhythm seem to come out

wa..u da bomb! goth babe...

same here...goth-esque kinda tune do pops out from my head sometimes, even the lyirics. Normally it's be in the minor key coz minor key always sound darker and major keys...

actually despite my old age, i'm suddenly into all these european goth metal / goth rock bands now (nightwish, xandria and within temptation and the likes)..kinda looking forward to play in a band of similar nature...u wanna do a side project? pm me

and if only i can play keyboards / synths...goth-metal signature style must have synths...oh well!

emo stuff is what exactly??? i'm from the old skool, started listening to Maiden, Dio back in the mid 80s, then progressed to thrash in the early 90s...so I can never really comprehend or accept this new so-called emo genre...to me, all songs are 'emo' to some extent coz all songs are true from the heart...dont have to label it lah...complete bollocks there. Just ask any 30 year old music freaks and they will surely agree with me.

This is just like in the 90s when ppl start calling some sort of sound as alternative...so i always loathe this term as well.

Heck, if emo is about dark lyrics, screams and talking about anger and self-loathe - Kreator is an emo band! hehe.

gosh am i being emo about emo? what's my point again? hehe...

but huntress - goth is good. i salute u!...goth is emo as well...haunting melodies, dark fantasy lyrics...

I agree with u....yes I am in the 30s too. Smile

I have problem with the emo genre too. I can hardly differentiate emo from punk, goth, grunge..even industrial. My nephew recently asked me what's proto punk....I answered I knew Proton Saga only Smile

I remember someone I met in England told me "forget about genre...music is music". I used to think that the guy was an idiot who could not differentiate music. Now I think he got a point. We should not be too concious about genre. Playing music the way we love it is good enough. I don't think Nirvana/Mudhoney/Soundgarden/Alice In Chain/ etc invented grunge....they just played rock songs in their own way....

I've debated this topic with friends before: they feel that finding a strong melodic line before doing anything else is the best way to start writing a song. But I can't do that. I'd rather have a strong melodic chord structure/progression, the backbone of any song, before I can create melodies.

I can't find any ideas if I only have melody lines.

I'm not that good of a musician, so when I stumble upon any melodic ideas with my guitar, I'm unable to see their full beauty, until I play around with, and can see how they contrast with different types of chord successions. (And yang tu, kena experiment sampai jumpa, tu yang susah tu. Razz)

Chord progressions gives a song most of its hue, I think.

BTW, my musical taste is preferential kepada yang sangat kuat melodi. Kalau melodi takde, I can still listen to a song, tapi I won't remember it, and I won't have much of an interest for it. Which is why I listen to a lot of videogame music, and Japanese pop music, sebab these genres sangat pentingkan kekuatan melodi.

So to sum it up, the way I write songs is this. First, I'll try to find a good chord progression, lepas tu, build up what I have slowly, adding in melodies (that I hum along with the tune) and complementing harmony lines.

The entire thing will be messed up by the time I finish though, so lepas dah siap all of the content that I want to be in that song, I will reshuffle the order of the song for better coherence.

That's my 2 cents Razz

hey since we're on the topic of using the subconscious to write music....
i write alone. and most of my songs especially the recent ones actually come from dreams. the tunes come when i'm half asleep or when i just woke up. and it really helps.....dreams can really help u write things that u normally don't. i remember my first minor key song came in a dream. before that i could only create songs in major....
my advice is, get a midi program. it's not hard to get the hang of even if you can't write notes at first. in fact you might actually learn how to write notes from messing with midi instead of the other way round.
that way, whenever you get a tune you can quickly key it into the computer before you forget all about it.
it takes some effort to force yourself to get up and write it down but it's worth it, can't let a tune go to waste.
here's one tactic.....you know how dj's take bits and pieces of other ppl's songs and mix them together into one dance song? but actual songwriters can try this instead: let's say u have an idea of a certain mood you wanna write about. for example, a feeling really bummed out around 545pm under a cloudy sky sorta mood. so, just before you sleep, listen to all the songs from other artiste's in your cd collection that have that mood. then, when you lie down to sleep, play all those songs again in your head. imagine them in detail without using a radio, try to "hear" every riff, drum roll, etc. until you fall asleep. if you're lucky, your own song will come after you blank off for awhile. if it does then get up and quickly write it and good luck making it to the office on time tommorrow.
once you get the hang of it, it's actually a bit better than using drugs....but i don't know. i wouldn't try drugs. they're expensive.
lastly u shuld keep all the songs u create, even the sucky ones. things can happen where one day, even months later, u suddenly come up with a melody or whatever that can fit into that old song and make it better. or u might create new songs that can make use of parts from some of the old songs u rejected. not that i actually practiced this. i took most of my old songs and broke the cds into pieces, ran over them with my car and threw them into the drain. but there was a personal reason behind that, so it's different.

Banyak cara laaa.......paling mudah tiru jer lagu orang....maksud aku....verse amik lagu SM. Salim, chorus amik lagu Beyond, bridge amik lagu....emm Nirvana...hahahah dah siap satu lagu yg sangat pelik....orang bukan tau sebab melodi line nanti ko buat style ko..nak growl ke...nak jerit ke style rock n roll ke....jangan sumbang dah laaa...cuba carik root chord kat mana...sumbat jer laaa...bab lirik belasah jer....carik laaa apa-apa buku citer...hehehehe...fucking rip off! hahahaha. As long as tak sampai empat bar tuu tak kira ciplak laaaa...hehehehe
