hi, can somebody please explain to me the use of sidechains , and how it generally works. Currently im using a rack compressor, mainly for vocals and for some guitars. What im wondering about is whether the side chain OUT sends processed or unprocessed signal? or does the compression happen on both before and after sending/receiving it to/from the sidechain?

hm.. i'd say this way..
it is an external circuitry usually found in dynamic controllers (gate or comp.. let say) that will affect the input signal when this side-chain is set at certain threshold. i give you an example..

1.radio dj ducking
ever notice that when a dj is speaking, the music suddenly decreases in volume? this is one of the fine example of side-chain..

music > compressor input
dj mic(signal taken from somewhere) > thru side-chain.
then find at the compressor something like 'external' button..press it, so the input signal is affected when the threshold hits the external signal.
sorry, not so good at explaining technical terms. hope this helps Smile

and worth mentioned, gate is the best creative tool when it comes to side-chaining. dance music benefits a lot from this.
