A'kum and hi

I’m in a dilemma choosing between digital keyboard and MIDI Controller
The gap of the price between digital keyboard and MIDI Controller is not huge
What should I choose?

A blank MIDI Controller with no build in sound/speakers or a Digital Keyboard with MIDI out
I can see with adding a few bucks more for getting the Digital Keyboard with MIDI out is a good investment.
Are there any differences between both of it in terms of use?
Does it produce the same output in velocity sensitive?
In terms of quality, which one is better?

Thank you for your time

I’m really appreciate it

if ur not planing to use the sound from the keyboard..just buy a controller...and also depending on ur budget.

velocity sensitivity is depending on each model i think...

Thank you for the reply okta and denhock
Actually I have a groove box with build in synth with MIDI in, out and Thru
The groove box has a small keyboard and it’s hard to control

If I buy the digital keyboard with midi output, I will get an extra feature such as build in and upgradeable tutorial using keyboard and plus more on board samples

About velocity sensitive, yeah, you are right okta, it depends on the model
My groove box is not velocity sensitive
If I hook it up with midi controller with velocity sensitive, the output still not velocity sensitive because the output comes from the groove box
Or the output depends on the MIDI controller because it sends the MIDI signal to the groove box to produce sound with velocity sensitive
I’m confuse but I think it will produce a no velocity sensitive output because the groove box itself is not velocity sensitive

i think ur groove box can generate sound at different velocities....
my cheap ass casio keyboard has now vel sens. keys...but when i play midi files from my PC to trigger the sound from my casio keyboard the vel. does change...i hope that's the same deal for ur groovebox.

it's nice to have outboards if u don't have a powerful pc. Most soft synths need well build pc(depends how much stuff u planning to run)
soft or hard synth...both has it's pros and cons.

Specification on my groove box told that this stuff is not velocity sensitive
In your case okta, when you trigger the sample of your digital keyboard from pc will not produce a sound with velocity sensitive
You’re using pc keyboard to trigger the digital keyboard that is velocity sensitive and it will produce a no velocity output

It’s a different case with me
The groove box itself is not velocity sensitive
How come the MIDI controller can make it velocity sensitive?

In your case, the trigger is not velocity sensitive (PC) but the source of the sound comes from a midi keyboard that is velocity sensitive and it will produce a no velocity output

In my case, the trigger (MIDI Controller) with velocity sensitive and the source of the sound comes from a groove box which is not velocity sensitive and it will produce a no velocity sensitive output

I think I must try it myself and try to find out the real answer
It’s a bit trickier than I thought
Thank you okta for sharing your opinion and experience

I'm still in the process choosing which is suitable for my use
I will update you guys later
When I have a free time, I will pay a visit to the store where I bought the groove box and ask them to hook it up with a midi controller

I'm talking about Korg the Electribe series
This is the product that I will never ever regret buying it
The sound is beyond expectation

The digital keyboard that I’m planning to buy is a small size keyboard (the cheap one punya la) without velocity sensitive (Below 7 hundred)
The MIDI controller has a full size keyboard with velocity sensitive (Below 5 hundred)
Add some money and getting the digital keyboard, I will get myself a digital keyboard teacher, lol

Each of it has its own pros and cons
If someday I bought two of it in diferent time
I will regret for not waiting to get a real high end keyboard witih MIDI in/out/thru, but how long I must wait? Smile

The digital keyboard that I’m interested is the keys without lights
It only has a monochrome display
The keys with lights just like kids but it will be fun to learn (but not for me)

I will post some beats of the korg electribe series in the near future
I’m having trouble with registering for i-bands account (I followed all the instructions)
I will post the beats at other sites and I will inform you the link

BTW, you have a great songs okta, I’ve listen to it and it’s really great

I couldn’t believe what happened today
I’ve learn something new today
I’ve test it all out by hooking up the groove box with a midi controller
Well
Here it goes

The midi controller has more advantage than the digital keyboard with MIDI out
First of all, the velocity sensitive works
Secondly, the pitch bend and the assignable modulation wheels works too

There is a bad side of midi controller attached to a groove box
I can’t record the samples with velocity sensitive, pitch bend and modulation wheels into the groove box recorder
But I still can record it via multi-track software which is not bad at all
It just a minor thing really
When the time comes, I will have a go with ESI KeyControl 49

I’m all wrong before, practical is good than theory
How about learning to play keyboard with build in song that we don’t like?
I guess I must find a book called Piano for dummies
I just check the digital keyboard out, seems there is only 1 mono output
I guess it will have a bad output because it doesn’t mention the sampling rate
But it will be useful if you want to teach yourself how to play keyboard with this type of keyboard
In my opinion, it wills safe your time and money
But don’t expect to become pro by learning through this thing
At least we know the basic things and perhaps can carry on growing

Thank you guys for giving some feed back
At last all my misery about keyboard has been solved (for now)
Thank you okta for your time, your track has it owns special, unique
Denhock, I will meet you soon to get the ESI KeyControl 49 when I got the cash (tapi tak tau bila la)
Gong Xi Fa Cai to Mr Dennis and Mr Loke
Thank you GryMlock, I will try it right away
